Eating a diet chock full o’ vitamins and nutrients has forever been fundamental to health, but now clinical research demonstrates that there could be a link between drug dependency and dietary insufficiencies. Carolyn Reuben, a nutrition expert (and the executive director of the Community Addiction Recovery Association in Sacramento, CA) believes that our bodies often respond to certain dietary inadequacies in a way that may in the end result in psychological troubles and/or addiction.

She and other nutrition experts view deficiency in omega-3 fish oil as part of the cause. Based on a person’s substance of choice or major ailments, Reuben says researchers can pinpoint which amino acids, vitamins and nutrients are insufficient.

Individuals suffering from drug often don’t eat a sound diet. Furthermore, substances exhaust essential nutrients from the addict’s body, so replacing and preserving them are an important part of recovery. Moreover, drugs drain vitamins and nutrients from the addict’s body, therefore replenishing and maintaining them are an important part of rehabilitation.

Reuben believes, paraphrased, that there’s an an important connection between our conduct and our sustenance, a direct link between our food intake and good mood. When somebody starts drinking or taking drugs and their reply is, “I don’t feel high, I feel natural,” that’s the sign that says they came into life with a bio-chemical deficiency. They are insufficient in something and we can fix that with our diet, sometimes with amino acids, fish oil, vitamin C or B. Fish oil benefits seem to be of great significance.

This method is based on a study by Professor Stephen Schoenthaler, PhD, who discovered a link between elevated sugar consumption, reduced vitamin intake and violence, in 1985. He discovered that prison inmates who were given day-to-day nutritional supplements experienced up to a 43% drop in violence, which led researchers to start researching the relationship between nutrition and drug abuse. More recent clinical analysis have also found that supplying inmates omega-3 fish oil capsules also minimizes aggression.

I believe that the reason for this effect of fish oil is because of its’ effect on the human brain. The brain is composed of about 70% fat, a great deal of which is docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, one of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. As a result, the omega-3s fish oil have been found to be an effective treatment for a number of neurological disorders of the brain including depression, Alzheimer’s disease and ADHD. The effect of fish oil on hostility was also noted by the British Association of Anger, who published research showing that omega-3s could reduce incidents of road rage.

The CARA program suggests that people (in cooperation with their doctor) commence a regimen of taking 3 meals daily, each having at least 20 grams of protein, at least 4 cups of veggies, 2 grams of vitamin C, a multivitamin, 1000-3000 mg of omega-3 fish oil, 500 mg of L-glutamine, and 2-3 mcg of chromium. It also suggests avoiding white sugar and flour, which may deplete the body of vitamin B. The program also suggests doing away with white sugar and flour, which could strip the body of vitamin B.

Although many factors are responsible for substance and alcohol addiction, eating a diet rich in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fish oil is unquestionably a key part of the successful route to recovery and a drug-free life!

In the world we’re living in today we’re more stressed than ever before. Driving around town you’ll see people yelling and cursing at other people in their cars just because somebody is driving a little too slow.

Relationships and kids are driving the parents crazy as well as everybody around them. People are stuck at jobs for 40 hours a week that they hate with people they hate. If we don’t start to reduce or stress and cortisol levels then we will continue to put on fat as our bodies go into adrenal fatigue.

Stress can be found in other less known places such as in overtraining, pollution, climate and bad nutrition. As our bodies become stressed our adrenal glands which sit on the top of our kidneys release a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is the fight or flight hormone that quickly allows us to stay on the top of our game in case of nearby danger.

Unfortunately we don’t have much of a threat around us as our ancient ancestors once did and as our adrenal glands keep shooting out cortisol they’ll eventually become more and more fatigued and will put our bodies in a hormonal chaos. Some of the effects of adrenal fatigue from stress include insomnia, weight gain and decreased sex drive. But all hope is not lost, here are some things you can do to turn the page on your stress.

1. Get your nutrition under control quickly. Nobody can expect their body to be healthy when they’re feeding it garbage or the stuff they’re not supposed to be eating. Find out your metabolic typing diet and start eating healthier to ensure your body is receiving the proper fuel to live strong.

2. Start exercising more. This may sound obvious but there are some keys to success with this one especially if you are really stressed out and are in adrenal fatigue. Start by going for walks either by yourself or with your dog and don’t start up some crazy hard exercise program. This will only make things worse as your body is already in a state of disrepair, start slow and then gradually build up the intensity.

3. Reduce stress. I know this one sounds a lot harder than what it really is but if you decide to start taking time for yourself then you’ll find your stress levels will go down dramatically. Start doing some daily meditations, do some yoga and/or tai chi and try taking a quick power nap in the afternoon. You don’t have to fall asleep for an hour for the nap but just taking a quick 15-minute time out in your car with your eyes close and no noise can do wonders.

4. Get enough rest and recovery. This means going to bed at a decent hour like 10:00pm or 10:30pm and not midnight or later. This is because our bodies start the recovery process around 10:00pm and if we don’t go to bed until later our bodies won’t go through the proper rest and recovery process that it’s designed to do. Even if you get 8 hours of sleep by going to bed at 2:00am and waking up at 10:00am your body is still thrown off and you’ll still be tired the next day.

All times of loneliness, confusion and restlessness come for a powerful reason-so we can stop our usual way of being in order to discover where true strength, connection and understanding lay. These difficult times are actually a gift, removing us from preoccupation with that which is not important and causing us to embark upon a journey into what is truly meaningful and healing in our lives.

A powerful way to dissolve restlessness is to turn to that which is greater than yourself, to open your heart and ask or pray for guidance and direction. By doing so, we let go of our reliance only upon our rational mind.

Another way of calming the restless mind is to stop your endless round of activities and simply sit down. You do not ask for help. You simply sit, back straight, legs crossed, eyes down. You do not speak, reach out, touch, or listen to the troubles of others. Certainly, you do not offer consolation or turn to others for support. In fact, what you thought of as support is taken away. If someone doing this with you, is having trouble, experiencing sorrow or pain, you do not interfere. Their experience is precious and they are now being given the opportunity to face it fully. The support you offer is silent and profound, just sitting strongly besides them, facing your own experience, and not moving.

As you engage in this practice, you discover that there is nothing you need to lean on.. Everything you need is right here, within. Just as you are, you are complete and whole. The only problem is you do not realize it, your life and mind are so cluttered, you are so attached to that which has no value and constantly seeking more.

This practice focuses the mind and heart, allows you to gather your scattered energy and be in touch with your essential self. .As you practice daily, your life becomes rooted in its original source. Gradually, your perceptions of life alter and you become able to live a life of balance, simplicity, sincerity and truth.

Usually, when most of us want to see beauty in a room, we bring in fancy paintings, furniture, precious objects. In this practice, when you want to see beauty in a room, you take everything out, one thing after another. Then when the room is empty, you can see its original nature. Its beauty shines by itself. In this practice you do the same. You take everything out of your life that causes clutter, static, confusion, greed. You take out plush furniture and people to lean on. As you do this, you naturally find your own inner balance and strength.

Usually, we live our lives in the opposite manner, seeking strength, comfort, support, from everything and everyone. But the more we search, cling and hunger, the worse our suffering becomes. Soon we are a slave, easily manipulated by those people and things that offer temporary salves and cures. This practice teaches not to lean, not to weaken yourself and others this way. Instead we simply cut the dependent mind. Once we do so, we naturally stop tossing and turning, stop clinging to others, and turn instead to the very source of healing and well being within.

Most hardgainers usually think they have to train harder and more often than other guys that were blessed with better genetics… It is probably because of the abundant ‘professional’ advice that makes you believe that training more is the only answer to overcomming your skinny hardgainer genetics.

I know how it feels to want a great muscular body and be successful with good-looking women… But training harder and more often is not the answer to your frustration… In fact, it is only going to make things worse because by doing that, you will most likely put your body into overtraining zone. And as you may already know, overtraining is not what you should aim for.

The challenges hardgainer have to face are more complicated and therefore they require more “sofisticated” answers. It would be very hard to give you all of them in one article, so for now, let’s just talk about how to deal with overtraining…

#1: Ignore those ‘big rats’ telling you to extend your training because you’re a hardgainer. Find a training program which reflects and understands the needs of an ectomorph body type. A good hardgainer work-out system should not only give you the know-how to avoid overtraining but also tell you how to actually take advantage of it and gain muscle even when you hit ‘plateau’…

#2: Your muscles do NOT grow while you’re ripping them apart in the local gym! And hardgainers are specially challenged when it comes to recovery after working-out. My hot tip here would be to give your muscle tissues enough space to recover by giving them one day off between work-out days.

#3: Since the ectomorph body functions on different principles than the endomorph does, you will also need to adjust the time spent in the gym. While some people would advise you to keep your workouts shorter than 60 minutes, I say keep it under 45 minutes! And here’s why: Training longer than 45 minutes causes the drop in your anabolic hormones response. You start losing your energy and instead of building muscle mass you actually start to burn your muscle tissue because your body is looking for the extra source of energy it needs. So in order to get the maximum results you have to keep your workouts rather short. An intense 35-minute workout will give you much better gains and your body will be also able to recover faster, which is essential to avoid overtraining!

#4: When you start to feel that you are getting really tired and have no energy during 2 – 3 workouts in a row (basically, when you feel like run over by a train for a week), you have to stop your training right away! Your body is telling you that you are pushing it too much and that you have crossed the line of overtraining. Once you are in the overtraining zone there ae two things you can do:

Take a complete week off of training and give your muscles the extra recovery time they desperately need. Your body will use it to repair the damaged muscle tissue building up your muscles bigger and stronger, so it’s actually going to do more good to take that time off!

Do ’sub-failure’ training, which basically means that during the workout you’re stopping two to three repetitions short of muscular failure. You can train this way for 2 – 3 weeks and then go back to your “normal” work-out.

If you’re working out frequently, and pushing yourself hard, odds are that at some point you’ll train too much, or exert yourself too hard during a workout and feel pain. Now, hopefully this isn’t the searing, white hot pain that accompanies a snapping sound, but rather the deep throb and ache that comes from overuse. So there you are later that night, icing your elbow or knee, frowning and wondering how it came to this. What to do? Should you just take two weeks off and call it quits, or work through it, or is there a middle ground?

First, let’s clarify a few things. People often complain of tendonitis when they feel a pain in their elbow or the like, but they usually do not have an actual swelling of the tendon, which is the technical definition of tendonitis. Instead, they most likely have tendonosis, which quite simply means pain in the tendon, a term which is vague enough to apply to most such cases. Therefore, tendonosis is usually what athletes experience, especially when it comes through overuse (repetitive stress) as opposed to acute trauma brought about a specific injury.

The most basic rule of thumb, the one that precedes and is more important than any other rule is as follows: if it hurts, don’t do it. There used to be a popular slogan that ran: no pain, no gain, but that wasn’t meant literally; rather they intended to indicate that you need to work out really hard, get that burn and push your limits in order to achieve results, not actively workout in pain. So if you’ve hurt your elbow or knee, stop whatever exercise you’re doing that brought that pain about.

Now, let’s do some logical thinking. If you’ve developed tendonosis, most likely you’ve been working out too hard. You’ve literally overused that joint, and worn it out. Logically speaking, what do you think the most sensible thing would be to make it feel better? Yes, taking a break. Not from exercising in general, but from the exercise that aggravates that injury. Two weeks is the standard amount of time, because that gives your body time to heal, to recover. So change up your routine so as to give that joint a break, and do something else.

Also, targeted stretching can be great. Some research online can quickly reveal what physical therapy stretches are used for each problem area, and so you can avoid actually paying for physical therapy by just mimicking them at home. However, most people don’t stick with the actual physical therapy exercises, or avoid the parts that are uncomfortable, and thus don’t get the full benefit of such stretches, which is why sometimes it can make sense to make an appointment so as to get somebody to force you to recover properly.

Finally, there are a number of other options to explore. For short term relief, consider using NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such Ibuprofen, Alieve, Naprosen and Naproxen to reduce inflammation. However, do not use these for long term pain. You should also explore self mysofacial release, which can be excellent for tendonitis, muscle pain, and generalized fatigue.

Many people experience anxiety at the mere thought of going to the dentist. They delay a visit until driven by a severe toothache. By the time this happens, the treatment is more extensive and therefore more expensive than it might have been. Technology has advanced in dentistry as well as other fields. Unlike in the past, today most dental procedures are pain free. And those people who suffer anxiety to the point that it prevents them from obtaining proper care need only talk to their dentist in advance. Dentists can provide both sedation and premedication to help reduce and even eliminate anxiety.

Most dental procedures are performed with the patient under anesthesia to be certain that pain is reduced or eliminated. Local anesthetics are used to numb the area that is to be treated. Dentists use this type prior to drilling a tooth or doing a root canal. First a numbing agent is rubbed on the gum and then the anesthetic is injected to deaden the entire area where the dentist will work. However, if infection, inflammation or pain is present, it may not be possible to use a local anesthetic. In this case the dentists injects the anesthetic into a nearby nerve. This procedure numbs a larger area.

When general anethesia is used the patient loses consciousness. Very few dental procedures are performed in this manner due to the risks that are involved. It is possible for complicated oral surgery to be performed in an operating room using a general anesthetic. Sedation and premedication are prescribed for patients that are extremely anxious about undergoing treatment. Teeth cleaning is not normally done with an anesthetic unless the patient is particularly sensitive. Antibiotics may also be prescribed prior to dental procedures.

Perhaps the most common dental procedure involves fillings. Teeth decay or become chipped. The area where the decay occurs is called a cavity. After administering an anesthetic, the dentist will clean the tooth and then removed the decayed portion with a drill. The filling material is then placed into the opening and allowed to harden. Front teeth are always filled with a plastic material that is the same color as the tooth. The same type of material may be used for teeth that do not show. However, these teeth may also be filled with an amalgam material or gold, depending upon the patient’s desire.

When a tooth is badly chipped or broken, the dentist may apply a crown. In this case the dentist needs to make an impression of the original tooth. Then the damaged tooth is drilled down to a stub and another impression is made. The dentist will use both impressions to create an artificial tooth that will fit over the stub. Then this tooth is fitted and cemented to the stub. When finished, it resembles the original tooth. Fitting a crown requires two dental appointments. During the first the impressions are made and the stub is prepared. The stub is fitted with a temporary crown while the permanent one is being prepared. The permanent crown is then fitted during the second visit.

There are four forms of Lupus: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus, Drug-Induced Lupus Erythematosus, and Neonatal Lupus. When people discuss lupus, they are usually referring to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. However, lupus in any form is an autoimmune disease. Our immune system is programmed to protect our bodies from foreign invaders that will do us harm such as germs, bacteria, and viruses. As soon as the immune system senses the presence of an invader, it produces antibodies to destroy it. However, in the case of an autoimmune disease, the immune system fails to distinguish between the cells of our body and a foreign invader and attacks our body cells.

Drug-induced lupus is caused by certain prescription drugs. It may have symptoms similar to systemic lupus erythematosus but it does not attack major organs and it is not chronic. This illness goes away within six months of stopping the medication. Neonatal lupus affects babies born to mothers who have lupus. It is a rare condition and can be treated before or at birth. Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus is restricted to the skin. Rashes develop on the face, neck, scalp, in the mouth and nose. This form of lupus may also be accompanied by hair loss and changes in skin pigmentation.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus can attack any part of the body and may be mild or severe. Severe lupus affects major organs of the body such as the heart, lungs, brain, nervous system and kidneys. However, most cases of lupus are mild. Lupus affects women more often than men. Nearly ninety percent of the patients are women. The disease is most common in women between the ages of 15 and 44. It is also more likely to strike people of color. African Americans, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, Asian Americans and Hispanics are more likely to contract lupus than Caucasians. These ethnic groups will also experience symptoms at an earlier age and be more severely affected.

Lupus is a disease in which patients have good days and bad days. Some days your symptoms are worse and you feel ill; other days the symptoms are not as bad and you feel better. It is not a contagious disease in that it can be transmitted by contact however there is some evidence to indicate heredity may play a role. Lupus is extremely difficult to diagnose. The medical profession refers to lupus as “the great imitator” because its symptoms are the same as is present in many other illnesses. The symptoms are also vague and intermittent. And they vary according to the part of the body that is under attack.

There is no one diagnostic test that is conclusive. For instance there is a blood test called antinuclear antibodies or ANAs. It tests for the presence of abnormal antibodies. If one has a negative result, it indicates that one does not have lupus but a positive result does not mean that one does have. It will sometimes require years before a doctor can make a definite diagnosis of lupus. Treatment is dependent upon the part of the body that is affected by the disease, as is the type of doctor who will administer the treatment.

Sinuses are air filled sacs located in your head. You have four pair: frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid. The frontal sinuses are located in the bone just above your eyes. The maxillary sinuses lie beneath your cheeks. Ethmoid sinuses are on either side of your nose but further back in your skull. Sphenoid sinuses are just below the ethmoid sinuses. These sacs are lined with thin membranes that produce mucus. The mucus flushes out bacteria, viruses and dust. It drains out of the sinuses and into the nose through small openings. When these openings become blocked sinusitis occurs. Sinusitis is the term used to describe inflammation of the sinuses.

Sinusitis can be chronic or temporary. Infections or allergies may cause the thin membranes in the sinuses to swell. Then the openings are blocked causing discomfort and a feeling of congestion. Bacteria also infect the sinuses when the mucus builds up and offers a breeding ground. Sinus blockage can also be caused by a viral infection. If the inflammation is caused by bacteria, it is usually accompanied by fever, congestion, a green nasal discharge, pain, a red flush over the sinus and a toothache just below the sinus. In very serious cases, high fevers and shaking chills may occur.

How sinusitis is treated depends on the cause. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics. Other infections may be treated with decongestant pills, nasal sprays, antihistamine pills, or nasal corticosteroid sprays. There are also some home remedies that are effective to prevent and treat sinusitis. It is recommended that the person drink lots of fluids, at least sixty-four ounces a day. This will keep the mucus thin and flowing. Apply warm packs over the infected sinuses or inhaling steam is also effective. If you believe that your sinusitis is due to seasonal allergies, try to determine the cause of the allergy and then avoid the allergen.

There are also some lifestyle changes that may be required. Scuba divers are advised to avoid diving until their sinusitis is completely cured. Anyone planning to travel by air needs to avoid flying if congestion is still present. The changes in air pressure that occur during flights can force more mucus into the sinuses. If people persist in flying, they are advise to use a decongestant an hour before taking off and use a decongestant nasal spray about a half hour before the plane embarks upon its descent. They should also consume lots of fluids during the flight, preferably water and juices.

When all the various treatments are not effective and sinusitis still recurs, your doctor may consider surgery as an option. The surgery is designed to enlarge the narrow sinus openings. During the surgery tiny endoscopes are inserted through the nose and into the sinus passages. Endoscopes are thin flexible tubes with a camera mounted on the tips. Most of them have a light, a viewer to reflect the image to the scope and a lens to enlarge the image. The surgery will widen the openings and thus improve drainage. No incisions are ever made on the facial skin.

Just about everyone wants a winning smile and a winning smile is invariably associated with attractive teeth. It is also connected to self-esteem. Children are often embarrassed to smile, as they are ashamed of their teeth. These feelings often carry over into adulthood. And no matter what other people may tell us, if we perceive our teeth as ugly that perception contributes to a negative self-image. These attitudes no doubt have popularized the practice of cosmetic dentistry. Now people can do something about their smile.

One prerequisite for a winning smile is white teeth. Over time teeth become stained for various reasons such as tobacco use, consumption of certain foods and beverages and the aging process. So tooth whitening is a sought after dental treatment. When people feel they cannot afford the dental chair, they try home remedies and sometimes with disastrous results. A pretty smile is crucial to some careers notably runway models. While established professional models can afford professional care newbies in the field who are not yet established have been known to try such agents as Clorox and Whiteout to improve their smile.

Professional bleaching is done in one of two ways. The dentist applies the whitening solution to your teeth and then uses a small gun to direct heat or light to the teeth, which activates the bleaching process. The dentist might also mix the solution with toothpaste and brush it one. Professional whitening procedures usually last for six to twelve months but this time can often be extended by proper home care as directed by the dentist.

There are many tooth whitening agents sold over the counter for home use. These are less expensive than professional treatments but they have disadvantages. They may initially whiten the teeth because they use an abrasive agent. But they eventually become ineffective and even harmful because this agent wears off the enamel of the teeth and exposes the yellow dentin underneath. There are also a variety of bleaching kits for use at home. These can be safe and effective if used under a dentist’s supervision however they do have side effects. Some people’s gum’s are irritated by the ingredients. Teeth may become more sensitive to cold and heat. Occasionally people accidentally swallow the solution, which can result in nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Over the counter kits vary as to how long the results last.

Sometimes whitening is not enough. Teeth may be unattractive due to the presence of gaps or cracks. In this situation bonding can be done. Bonding involves first painting a resin substance over the tooth and then using a special curing light to harden it. Bonding lasts from three to five years. Another process used to repair a chipped tooth or correct uneven teeth is the application of veneers. Veneers are thin shells made of a plastic substance and used to cover the teeth. First, the dentist drills off the enamel. Then the plastic coating is applied using a powdery substance. Once applied, the dentist shapes and polishes the tooth. Veneers last anywhere from three to twelve years.

Our feet probably suffer more abuse than any part of our body and receive the least care. Most people devote far more time and money than caring for their faces than looking after their feet. But sometimes the feet decide to revolt and remind us of their presence. The results can be both annoying and painful. Improperly fitted shoes are a common cause of foot problems. Other causes are a result of medical problems elsewhere in the body such as poor circulation, diabetes, or nerve damage. But most foot problems are at least helped if not cured by care in selecting a shoe that fits properly.

Most people’s feet are arched between the heel and the toes. But some people have feet that are flat with no arch. This condition is called fallen arches. Most of us are born with flat feet and don’t develop arches until we are between five and six years old. But some people never develop arches. Other people’s feet flatten as they age due to stretched ligaments. While many people with fallen arches have no foot problems others have pain and a stiff feeling in their feet. They may also experience these symptoms in their legs and lower back. For those who do have pain, arch supports can be custom designed for shoes and wearing these often alleviates the pain. Exercising the ligaments and muscles of the foot can also help.

Another condition that causes foot pain is Morton Neuroma. The bones that comprise the central arch of your foot are called the metatarsal bones. If two of these happen to rub together, they irritate a nerve. A tumor develops on the compressed nerve. The result is intense pain, numbness, burning and cramping sensations in the foot. These symptoms all appear between the toes and in the ball of the foot. Conservative treatments include pads to relieve the pressure, wearing larger shoes, and corticosteroid injections. When these are ineffective, surgery is usually required. While the surgery is generally successful, the nerve tissue sometimes grows back and another neuroma is formed.

A foot ulcer is an open sore that appears on the foot. Common causes of foot ulcers are nerve damage, constant pressure on the area of the foot where the ulcer occurs, improperly fitted shoes, and poor circulation. Diabetics are more susceptible to foot ulcers because of their poor circulation. A person who develops a foot ulcer needs to see their doctor. Foot ulcer treatment generally does not involve surgery. But a neglected foot ulcer can become infected and that condition may result in gangrene.

When the fibrous tissue at the base of the heel and under the foot becomes inflamed the condition is known as plantar fasciltis. This frequently results in intense pain in the heel and the sole of the foot just in front of the heel. Flexing the sole upwards will worsen the pain.

The pain is most intense after periods of sleep and other inactivity. Conservative treatments include wearing a foam pad in the shoes, wearing a heel cup, or wearing a shoe cushion. When these treatments are ineffective, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to relieve pain and swelling. Stretching exercises are also recommended. If none of these treatments are effective, a doctor may recommend corticosteroid injections.
