Some say that depression causes obesity, yet others claim that it&#8217;s obesity that prompts a depressive state. Even researchers have been puzzled over this chicken-and-egg dilemma over the years. But there&#8217;s no question about it &#8211; obesity and depression are linked in both adolescents and adults, and no one wants to be stuck in either of these unfortunate situations.</p>
<p>There is no defined one-way link that states which causes which. Depression can cause a person to overeat and gain weight while being obese can cause an individual to get into a depressive state. The two can be co-dependent and feed off each other.</p>
<p>Depression causes obesity: Individuals with symptoms of depression tend to undergo drastic weight-related changes. People experiencing depression have a tendency to make poor food choices. Some tend to lose their appetite and a lot of sleep, while most are likely to overeat in an attempt to ward off the depression. Research has also observed that depression can cause decreased levels of the hormone seratonin. Seratonin acts as the brain&#8217;s oil and when we find ourselves in stressful or depressive states, we use more seratonin than is normally replaced. This results to the development of an appetite disorder . We either lose our appetite completely or yearn for sweets and carbohydrates as the brain tries to make more seratonin. Eating becomes a repressed effort to self-medicate and restore seratonin levels to normal.</p>
<p>Obesity causes depression: Overweight or obese people are 25 percent more likely to experience mood disorders such as overwhelming sadness and depression compared to those who are not. A low self-esteem and a tendency to isolate themselves contribute much to the cause of depression among overweight individuals who find themselves ostracized, discriminated against and stereotyped. The extra weight they carry can also result in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are known to be linked with conditions of depression.</p>
<p>Either way, depression and obesity are quite difficult states. Both conditions steal the life out of an individual and restricts him or her from fully enjoying the beauty of the world around him. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the main ways to lower cholesterol is to lose weight, and this one action is sometimes enough to get your cholesterol levels back in line. The challenge, however, is that many of us have tried numerous times to get our weight under control but with little success. Maybe we followed a diet for a while and the weight came off temporarily, but in a few months or a couple of years we find ourselves even heavier than when we started the diet in the first place so we go back on some type of diet or another again. We may even add more exercise into the mix, but we are still not successful, and we become frustrated.</p>
<p>Why does our body hold onto its weight when we are eating less and exercising more? One reason may have to do with the fact that when calories are restricted too much, the body thinks it is starving. When the body thinks it is starving, the metabolism shuts down to conserve fat so that you can survive. Many people end up eating 1,500 calories or fewer on an average day when they are trying to lose weight. This level of calorie intake may be low enough to slow your metabolism and put your body into starvation mode. In addition, the added exercise means the body needs more calories to maintain proper function not fewer. The body&#8217;s response to the increase in exercise when you are eating too little is to hold on to its fat stores even more than before.</p>
<p>Another factor that may be at play in people&#8217;s struggles to lose weight is the type of calories they are ingesting. Not all calories are created equal. It is not necessarily true that all we have to do is count calories and make sure we don&#8217;t consume too many if we want to meet our weight loss goals. For instance, foods that quickly spike blood glucose levels like sugar, high fructose corn syrup, juice, refined flours, baked white potatoes, chips, and white rice will cause more insulin to be released at a faster rate than foods that do not quickly spike blood glucose levels like temperate fruits, vegetables, whole cooked grains, beans, fish, and meat. Insulin signals the body to store fat. To help with weight loss, you want your blood sugar levels to remain as stable as possible.</p>
<p>Finally, eating less fat does not necessarily correlate to losing weight even though fat contains a lot of calories. In fact, there is growing amounts of research that suggest just the opposite. Incorporating enough fat into the daily diet can actually helps a person feel satisfied which can lead to eating fewer calories later in the day. In addition, some research is indicating that low carbohydrate diets not low fat diets are more likely to result in weight loss. It is interesting to note that over the past several decades, fat consumption in the United States has decreased; however, obesity levels have increased. Fat is simply not to blame. What is important is to eat healthy fats. Unrefined, extra virgin olive oil is one such healthy fat. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish are also considered good fats.</p>
<p>In summary, if you want to lose weight, do not cut your average daily calorie intake too low, eat whole foods that don&#8217;t spike blood glucose levels too quickly, and eat healthy fats. Once you are eating enough calories to support your every day functions, get exercise on most days of the week.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Some people are fat even if they don&#8217;t eat that much. In must cases, the problem lies on their metabolism. If your metabolism is slower than the normal rate, chances are, you will get fat because energy expenditure and the breaking down of fats are slow. There is, however, good news to those who are suffering from slow metabolism because metabolic damage can be repaired. Below are some ways on how to fix a slow metabolism.</p>
<p>Build some muscle mass</p>
<p>In order for you to build lean muscle tissues, you must engage in strength trainings. Strength trainings help burn more calories, whether you are at work or at rest. The more you build lean muscles, the faster your metabolism works. Before starting your strength training, perform some lunges, squats or push ups. Then you can then go ahead with the triceps pulls or simple bicep curls using a 5-pound free weight. Repeat this type of exercise at least three or four times a week.</p>
<p>Avoid skipping meals</p>
<p>Skipping meals or drastically reducing your calorie intake will only cause your metabolism to slow down. This is the body&#8217;s response to a short supply of calories in order to conserve energy. Instead, just slowly cut down your caloric intake by eating small but frequent meals.</p>
<p>Increase your protein intake</p>
<p>Protein is said to help in stabilizing the amount of insulin that is secreted into the blood stream. This is necessary in order to maintain a normal metabolic rate. Also, to effectively manage your weight, increase your protein intake and lower your sugar and fat intake. Protein will help you feel full, keep your metabolism high, and help build spare muscle tissues.</p>
<p>Get enough sleep and rest</p>
<p>According to studies, not getting enough sleep of at least eight hours a day can cause the body&#8217;s metabolism to drop. If you have problems sleeping at night, try to rest for a couple of hours during the day so your body won&#8217;t get tired and drained.</p>
<p>Keep yourself busy at night</p>
<p>Your metabolism usually drops towards the end of the day. So it is necessary to become active during this time of the day. You can perform aerobic exercises for thirty minutes before taking your dinner to help increase your metabolic rate even after eating.</p>
<p>Avoid the sedentary lifestyle</p>
<p>A lifestyle that lacks physical exercise will not only make you fat but is also dangerous to your health. So get up, move around, and keep yourself busy. Remember that the more you move, the more your body burns down fats. If you don&#8217;t have time for exercise programs, then do simple exercises such as taking the stairs instead of using the elevator, walking your dog in the park during afternoons, and window shopping with your friends instead of just sitting down and talking over a cup of coffee.</p>
<p>These things are very simple. All you have to do is to keep them in mind and put them into practice and you&#8217;ll be able to fix a slow metabolism the fast and effective way.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Steady state cardio meaning running on a treadmill for 45 minutes at near the same pace the entire time has been the standard method of weight loss since the 1980s when the popularity of aerobic classes exploded. Unfortunately we&#8217;ve been following a tradition that isn&#8217;t nearly the most effective means of weight loss, long-term and short-term.</p>
<p>Metabolic resistance training is a new phrase that has been gaining in popularity over the last couple of years and for a very good reason. It essentially causes a metabolic disturbance in your body meaning you&#8217;ll be burning calories up to 48 hours after you work because your metabolism will be at an elevated state. This is great for weight loss because you&#8217;ll find yourself burning fat even after you finish working out as opposed to steady state training where you stop burning calories once you stop training.</p>
<p>So what exactly is metabolic resistance training? It&#8217;s basically a way of training that incorporates high intensity interval training by means of weight resistance training. Now this doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean to pick up the latest issue of Muscle &amp; Fitness and lift weights all day. Instead you&#8217;re training with full body resistance training instead of muscle isolation exercises as well as doing sprints outside (or on the treadmill) and having a recover period in between.</p>
<p>Now metabolic resistance training is going to be significantly more difficult than steady state cardio but you&#8217;ll get more results quicker than you would doing the latter and it won&#8217;t take you nearly as long to do it. Most people aren&#8217;t accustomed to training this way and the level of intensity is usually something they are not able to handle so if you&#8217;re a beginner the best thing you can do is slowly progress your resistance up as you develop. A huge mistake many people take is going right into this high level of intensity training and after they nearly throw up they&#8217;ll quit and go hang out on a bicycle for the rest of their gym duration.</p>
<p>A very fundamental example of this is a sprinter and a marathon runner. If you watch the ending of a marathon and see the winner you&#8217;ll notice how incredible skinny and emaciated they look. This is not a very attractive body that you&#8217;ll want to have but they do the same type of training that you do, long steady state cardio. If you watch the Olympics and see the sprinters who win gold metals they have a very lean muscular look to them that is very attractive. They achieve this by sprinting, therefore by incorporating high intensity metabolic resistance training into their workouts.</p>
<p>So the next time you&#8217;re in the gym at least try this method of training and you&#8217;ll see for yourself how much of a difference it will make. It won&#8217;t be easy but you&#8217;ll be much happier with your results and it won&#8217;t take you nearly as long to do it. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hypothyroidism is a disease that affects the thyroid gland, causing a wide assortment of health issues, some of which can be severe. Gaining weight, losing weight, and feeling fatigued all of the time are among the first signs of thyroid disease and can signify various health issues including diabetes.</p>
<p>The thyroid, a small gland, is wrapped around the windpipe in the area of ones Adam&#8217;s apple. This small butterfly shaped gland has the main function of producing hormones which are necessary for certain bodily functions. It produces two hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These help oxygen get into body cells. The numbers, T4 and T3 reference a number of molecules of iodine which are present in each hormone molecule.</p>
<p>This tiny gland is the most important gland of a persons metabolism and extremely vital to existence. These are the only cells that are capable of absorbing iodine, a vital ingredient of the human body. This iodine is derived from foods and supplements we take in as part of our daily diet. The addition of iodized salt into the diet has largely been eliminated today due to so many other sources of it. The iodine enriched hormones in our body assist our cells in converting calories and oxygen into energy to help our bodies function efficiently.</p>
<p>Besides weight loss or gain, and feeling extremely fatigued, some of the more serious signs of hypothyroidism are hair loss, sleep apnea, shortness of breath, grittiness of the eyes or sensitivity to light, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), recurrent sinus infections, and vertigo or lightheadedness.</p>
<p>Some of the more commonly know causes of hypothyroidism include exposure to radiation, too much or too little iodine, lithium, use of cordarone (a heart medication), radiation treatments for cancer in the neck, chest, or throat areas, and over consumption of various foods which are considered &#8220;goitrongenic&#8221;. These vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, turnips, and radishes among others, also radioactive treatment for Grave&#8217;s disease which involves extensive use of iodine.</p>
<p>Babies born to mothers who have been treated for Grave&#8217;s disease while pregnant run a huge risk of being born with or soon developing hypothyroidism.</p>
<p>Problems caused by hypothyroidism vary by the symptoms although most can be controlled with the use of drug therapy, particularly by use of Levothyroxine and other thyroid hormone replacement drugs. In extreme cases, surgery may be called for.</p>
<p>Some practitioners have advocated use of some more integrative methods of treatment including, stress reduction therapy, certain anti thyroid dietary alterations, and including various traditional Chinese types of medicine. What may work for one particular case may not prove beneficial to another.</p>
<p>Among the twenty seven million or so people in the US alone suffering from thyroid disease, most have gone undiagnosed, at least initially. Patients and even many in the medical community find other sources for symptoms to seem more credible and tend to dismiss thyroid issues even though thyroid disease actually affects on almost every aspect of one&#8217;s health and is vital to many bodily functions. It is far more commonly diagnosed in women than in men and the risk increases with a person&#8217;s age.</p>

<p>First of all, how do you know you have hypothyroidism? It&#8217;s definitely tricky sometimes to connect a whole bunch of symptoms that could be individually be easily shrugged off. When it comes to having an underactive thyroid it&#8217;ll usually come down to a combination of a few of these symptoms and also the consistency of them to consider. Regardless, if you have any medical concerns it is always best to consult a doctor even if it&#8217;s just for your peace of mind.</p>
<p>Quite often one of the main symptoms of an underactive thyroid is a complete lack of energy. The other obvious sign is an enlarged gland or lump where your thyroid gland is situated. If you are getting a good amount of sleep and really struggling with exhaustion and tired muscles this could be an indicator. Also dry skin and hair or brittle nails and hair can be present. Another symptom is memory loss, lack of concentration and focus. Other most common symptoms are weight gain, low libido and even infertility to name a few.</p>

<p>A certain amount of diet and exercise can help with the main issue of underactive thyroid. Certain alterations can also relieve symptoms. One of the main causes of this disorder is a lack of iodine in the diet. This is found in various products such as bread and seafood. Exercise can help with transforming one hormone into another one that has a stronger and more important function. This should happen naturally on it&#8217;s own but does not so much when suffering from an underactive thyroid.</p>

<p>O&#8217;Neill explains, &#8220;The symptoms of hypothyroidism are the same as symptoms for menopause, chronic fatigue, and depression; they especially mimic the signs of clinical depression, and physicians frequently make the mistake of prescribing anti-depressants to women with hypothyroidism, putting the women at risk of even deeper depression or suicide. Women must demand their doctors administer the simple test for thyroid disorders.&#8221; O&#8217;Neill also advises women should look at a &#8220;constellation&#8221; of symptoms, which, taken altogether, inevitably signal hypothyroidism:</p>
<p>1.Unaccountable weight gain-Every woman gains a few pounds as she grows older, but if your body mass index suddenly falls outside the normal range even when your eating and exercise habits have not changed, the gain may indicate thyroid problems.</p>
<p>2.Constant fatigue-If you barely can keep yourself awake and moving through the middle of the day, but nothing in your life circumstances substantially has changed, ask your doctor to administer the simple hormone test that determines whether or not your thyroid gland is functioning properly.</p>
<p>3.Persistent body aches-If you always feel as though a bus just ran over you and then a baseball team beat you with bats and stomped you with cleats, and if the constant aches and pains persist even when you have not exercised aggressively or over-worked your muscles, demand a thyroid test. The combination of aches and fatigue very likely result from an under-active thyroid.</p>
<p>4.Depression-Sadness, despair, hopelessness, and feelings of worthlessness do not come automatically with advancing age. If you feel constantly sad and you lose interest in many of your favorite things, speak with your physician who will administer a variety of diagnostic tests. Make sure the tests include a thyroid evaluation.</p>
<p>5.Excessive hair loss-Excessive hair loss, more than any other sign, almost always points to hypothyroidism. Although women experience hair loss and balding almost as frequently as men, because the balance of androgens and estrogens changes as they age, nevertheless losing more than five or six hairs each time you comb or brush suggests a thyroid problem.</p>

Very often, most people who works out or exercise think that it is about doing a lot of cardio aerobic type workout to create a deficit in energy balance. However, most people overlooked the massive amount of time involved in aerobic workout to see any results and its sustainability. In truth, the best way is to fix the sluggish resting metabolism as it is accountable for 60-70% of your daily energy expenditure. Aerobic training alone just do not cut it.</p>
<p>Doesn&#8217;t it make more sense to work on the metabolism than just grind yourself away on the boring treadmill all day long trying to create a calorie deficit?</p>
<p>With higher metabolism, the body becomes more effective in losing the fat. The following are 5 tips you can take to kickstart your metabolism.</p>
<p><b>Eat Breakfast</b></p>
<p>This can be an important puzzle to increasing your metabolism. Too often, most people give the breakfast a miss without knowing that they are causing a decrease in their already sluggish metabolism. The worse part is that your body becomes more prone to fat storage when the metabolism is low. Be sure to start your day with a healthy breakfast made up of healthy protein and carbs filled with fibers. This way it will bump up the metabolism and optimise the fat-burning capacity of the body.</p>
<p><b>Eat Throughout the Day</b></p>
<p>Eating multiple times a day between 5-6 times can help increase metabolism and weight loss. By eating constantly a small portion of food, you induce the thermic effect caused by food digestion without the risk of putting on any weight. And it has been found in studies that people who eat more small meals lose more weight and people actually gain weight from cutting back on number of meals.</p>
<p><b>Perform High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)</b></p>
<p>Traditionally, long slow aerobic exercises are prescribed for weight loss. The truth is it can be the most time-consuming, boring and painful way to weight loss. Currently, HIIT training has been found to be the most efficient in terms of time-saving and fat loss. Not only it does not required too much time involved it is more effective in banishing the tummy fat than the long slow aerobic exercises. In terms of metabolism. HIIT help preserve lean muscle mass and elevate metabolism between 24-48 hours. However, it is important to get your doctor&#8217;s clearance before engaging in this vigorous form of exercise.</p>
<p><b>Muscle Training</b></p>
<p>Train the muscle using free weights, bodyweights or anything that challenge the muscles and allow it to develop more lean muscle mass. Muscle training is not only important in preserving the existing muscle mass but also helps consume more energy meaning the body is more efficient in burning fat at rest. The best form of muscle training is to engage in compound movement or multi-jointed exercises that targets the most muscles groups at a time. This way you train more muscles and increase high energy expenditure. Be sure to train the muscles 2-3 times a week.</p>

<p>Be sure not to starve yourself by missing all your meals. This is often a strategy that backfires quickly and commonly used by the desperate people who wants to lose weight fast. Starvation leads to binge eating and easy fat gain with the slow metabolism.</p>
