NIH announces international research initiative

Mental health experts are calling for a greater world focus on improving access to care and treatment for mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders, as well as increasing discoveries in research that will enable this goal to be met.

The Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health Initiative, led by the National Institutes of Health and the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases, has identified the top 40 barriers to better mental health around the world. Similar to past grand challenges, which focused on infectious diseases and chronic, noncommunicable diseases, this initiative seeks to build a community of funders dedicated to supporting research that will significantly improve the lives of people living with MNS disorders within the next 10 years.

Twenty-five of the specific challenges and the process used to derive them are described in an article that will be published on July 7, 2011, in the journal Nature.

“Participating in global mental health research is an enormous opportunity, a means to accelerate advances in mental health care for the diverse U.S. population, as well as an extension of our vision of a world where mental illnesses are prevented and cured,” said Thomas R. Insel, M.D., director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the NIH institute heading this effort.

According to the paper’s authors, the disorders targeted by the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health — for example, schizophrenia, depression, epilepsy, dementia, and alcohol dependence — collectively account for more years of life lost to poor health, disability, or early death than either cardiovascular disease or cancer. Yet, compared to illnesses like cardiovascular disease and cancer, there are far fewer effective treatments or preventive methods. In addition, interventions are not widely available to those who need them most.

In recognizing the need to address this imbalance, Pamela Collins, M.D., M.P.H., of the NIMH Office for Research on Disparities and Global Mental Health, and colleagues assembled an international panel of experts to identify research priorities using the Delphi method, a widely accepted consensus-building tool. The panel consisted of 422 experts in fields such as neuroscience, basic behavioral science, mental health services, and epidemiology, and represented more than 60 countries.

Over the course of two months, NIMH staff pared the panel’s initial list of 1,565 challenges down to 154, with input from a scientific advisory board. From this list, the expert panel selected the top 40, of which the top five challenges identified after the third and final round of ranking are:

Integrate screening and core packages of services into routine primary health care
Reduce the cost and improve the supply of effective medications
Improve children’s access to evidence-based care by trained health providers in low- and middle-income countries
Provide effective and affordable community-based care and rehabilitation
Strengthen the mental health component in the training of all health care personnel.

These top five challenges were ranked according to the ability to reduce the burden of disease, ability to reduce inequalities in health and health care, length of time until results can be observed, and the ability for the topic to be researched effectively.

“Addressing these challenges could have far-reaching effects, including increasing access to services and ultimately, reducing the treatment gap associated with these disorders,” said Dr. Collins.

The Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health Initiative is led by NIMH and the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases, in partnership with the Wellcome Trust, the McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Other NIH components participating in the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health include the Fogarty International Center; the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

It’s not uncommon to have a social anxiety disorder. In fact, approximately one in every ten people suffers from it at one point or another. Some suffer from the disorder when they experience any kind of social situations, while some only suffer from it during certain social situations, such as presenting at an event, speaking in public, or when performing in front of an audience. The anxiety and fears that overcome suffers are very real and substantive, even though non-sufferers may dismiss them as being unreasonable. Overcoming social anxiety is crucial because if unchecked and untreated, it could lead to a more severe social anxiety disorder which can even greatly interfere with your daily life and it may lead to needing professional psychiatric help.

There is no easy solution, but there are definite means of overcoming social anxiety disorder. Those suffering from social anxiety disorder deal with this problem every day. If you’re having problems with feelings of anxiety and nerves when faced with social situations, don’t give up. Individuals suffering from social anxiety disorder, otherwise known as social phobia, will do anything possible to stay away from certain social situations that they fear. Some even go to the extremes of avoiding situations where there are other people involved like social events, work meetings and school classes. They don’t show up at the events for fear that they will do something that will humiliate or embarrass them. If they do show up, they will not get involved.

The cause of social anxiety disorder is not yet known. Children who are shy often suffer from the disorder as adults. A person’s upbringing can also be a factor that causes one to experience it – a person with overly critical or overly protective parents are more prone to suffer from social anxiety disorder. It could also be because of abnormal reactions in brain parts that control emotional reactions. Or it could be causes by a combination of the three possible causes. Whilst the causes of the disorder have not yet been established, good progress has been made with the methods of treating it. The most successful technique that’s used is one called cognitive behavioral therapy, which is carried out by specially trained therapists. The purpose of this therapy is to replace the negative thoughts that occur with positive ones.

Other types of therapy that psychologists recommend include exposure therapy, relaxation therapy and breathing techniques. You can do it as in group or individual sessions. Reading self help books is also recommended, and there are many useful ones to choose from. For those who suffer really badly from social anxiety disorder, courses of medication may also be administered. Most of the medications work on brain chemicals, like serotonin, that are responsible for symptoms of anxiety. You can get these medications with the right assessment and prescription from a doctor. Medications don’t fully treat social anxiety disorder. Psychological therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy are more effective since they deal with the cause of fear and they also don’t have side effects.

Interacting with other people is one of the fears that an individual who is suffering from social anxiety is facing. The fear that they feel comes from their concerns of being afraid to be judged and evaluated by others. In this sense, an individual would consume most of his or her time contemplating different social situations and the possible reactions that they might encounter in a certain situation. As you can no doubt imagine, this results in an extremely stressful and depressing life, which is why the availability of social anxiety support is so important. Social anxiety support is one way to improve the fear to avoid aggravating the social anxiety problem. Most sufferers are nervous about asking for help, and just as many will not even admit to anyone else that they even have a problem. Fortunately, social anxious people can overcome their problem through this support. So, how does someone who wants social anxiety support find it?

Seeking help from a therapist is one way of social anxiety support. It is effective to use cognitive behavioral therapy to treat social anxiety. It is important to review and discuss problematic social situations that you cannot forget about. Doing so is essential to overcoming the problem. There is the option to do one on one with a therapist or in a group setting. Though it may seem the more difficult option, talking about your feelings in a group is the best approach, as you will soon find that their are others who are going through the same experience that you are. Aside from seeking help from a therapist, another way of social anxiety support that you can use along with cognitive therapy is by taking medications. There is a certain stigma attached to taking medication for mental health issues, but you should not let the ignorant views of others stop you receiving the treatment that you need. Medication alone is not the solution though, and it is no quick fix. It will help you physically, but you need to continue to work on your thoughts and emotions.

Calming down your lifestyle and finding some inner peace is important too. You need to learn how to properly relax, and you can use music to help you do so. Our state of emotions can be changed by the power of music. Emotional behavior and feelings can be dictated and inspired depending on the rhythm, subject, tempo and melody. Music has been used for thousands of years to inspire people in one way or another. Soothing music can take you away from what is actually infront of you to a place of your choosing. By associating relaxing music with happy past memories, you can return to those memories whenever you listen to relaxing music. Even if you are in doubt, you should try it out. After all, what have you got to lose?

To summarize, social anxiety support is not about a single magic solution, but rather about using a selection of solutions and tailoring them to your specific needs. By persevering with it, you can soon attend whatever social gatherings that you want to. All you have to do is try your best, and one day you will get there.

Well developed and well managed community mental health services are actually associated with low suicide rates. Hence, mental health services for the masses can be improved by focusing on the community based and specialized mental health services.

If ever you are in need of mental health services, you can contact your local affiliates of the national self help organizations or the local mental health center. Most of these agencies have the relevant information on the various services designed to meet the different needs of those who are suffering from different types of disorders such as anxiety conditions, panic disorders, schizophrenia, etc. Apart from these, they also provide information related to community mental health services designed specifically for children, refugees, HIV infected patients, the elderly, etc. Here are a list of various community health services available for your use.

Mental health act has provided a great opportunity in rendering different kinds of community care based upon individual needs. The provision of good residential accommodation for various groups of mentally disordered or patients with disorders who need constant care by the government aided agencies is a step towards enhancing the community health services.

Generally community health services treat or support people suffering with mental disorders in a domiciliary setting instead of placing them in a hospital or a psychiatric asylum. The various services offered by these community services usually differ from country to country. Most of the community services consist of psychiatric wards similar to that of a hospital. These services are mostly rendered by professionals and government organizations. According to the world health organization, community services are very easy to access by a wide range of people and are quite effective and even aid in reducing social exclusion.

When compared to private mental hospital, community services are less likely to have possibilities for the violation and neglect of human rights which are rarely encountered in few of the mental hospitals. These community services also play an important role in educating the people about the various common disorders and their corresponding symptoms. This way, people gain knowledge on various disorders and can easily recognize individuals who may be suffering from these disorders but might not really be aware of them. Aged and older people who require constant attention, can get benefited by these community services, instead of paying huge bills at private hospitals, they can get good care at the community services.

With the population in the older age group on the rise, there is need for the development of community mental health services in various localities. Also, with many specialists willing to volunteer at the community services, clients can gain a lot of benefits. Since, most of the mental health disorders occurrence do not have a clear reason behind them, the treatment usually is a long term one and for people who cannot afford highly expensive treatments and consultations, community mental health services is the best place to choose. With government pitching in to provide funds for them, it is time people think of visiting them when needed.

A behavioral or a psychological pattern which occurs in an individual and is believed to be the reason behind causing distress or disability and which is not generally a part of normal development is often referred to as mental illness or mental health disorder. There are various conditions that are categorized as mental health disorders and the common types include anxiety disorders, mood disorders, eating disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, addiction disorders, etc.

Anxiety Disorders – These kind of illnesses are often chronic and can be spotted in individuals right from childhood or can suddenly occur after the occurrence of an incident, which often is the trigger. The common symptoms include sweating, hypertension, muscle spasms, etc and at times these in turn lead to exhaustion and fatigue. Anxiety disorders generally include post traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, etc. The various treatment options are bringing change in lifestyle, pharmaceutical therapy, psychotherapy, etc

Personality Disorders – This illness in an individual can result in inflexible and extreme personality traits and which in turn distresses the individual or can cause problems at home or work or any other social gathering. The individual’s thoughts and behavioral patterns can be so different from what the society expects that they start interfering his or her own functioning. Examples of such behavior include obsessive compulsive personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, etc.

Mood Disorders – These kind of illnesses are also referred to as affective disorders and generally involve periods of feeling overly happy or persistent feeling of being extremely sad or fluctuations from extreme sadness to extreme happiness, etc. The most common examples of mood disorders include mania, depression, bipolar disorder, etc.

Eating Disorders – This type of illness is generally defined as having eating habits which are quite abnormal and may be related to excessive or insufficient food intake. However, the reasons behind them are quite complex and not yet clear. Various causes which can be attributed to eating disorders are child maltreatment or child abuse, parental influence, social isolation, cultural pressure, peer pressure, etc. In the United States, binge eating disorder is most common. Binge eating disorder is characterized by the following traits – consuming food when depressed or sad, eating large quantities of food when not really hungry, etc.

Psychotic Disorders – Distorted thinking and awareness are the characteristics of psychotic disorders. Among the most common symptoms of this disorder are delusions and hallucinations. Delusions are the imaginary false beliefs of the patients that he or she assumes to be true and hallucinations are described as the process of experiencing sounds or images which do not exist in real, for instance, hearing voices, etc. An example of a psychotic disorder is Schizophrenia.

Mental health disorders can generally be caused due to a combination of sources and in majority of these cases no single cause or reason is established. The more common view is that these disorders are a result of genetic vulnerabilities influenced by environmental stressors.

Have you stopped inviting friends to your home, because you are embarrassed by its cluttered condition? If people drop by unexpectedly, do you try to think of an excuse to avoid letting them come in? Is it easier to buy an item that you need rather than try to find it in your home, even though you know you have it somewhere?

A stressful home is not a healthful home, and if your house is cluttered, it causes stress. When you cannot find things because of the disorder, you become anxious, frustrated and tense. Some people try to relieve frustration by snacking — causing weight gain and even more stress.

If you are living with clutter, do something about it. It is possible to create a more organized and less stressful environment. You may think that you do not have time to straighten out the mess, but you will feel better if you do. And, after your home is organized, that not only does your health and clarity improve, but you’ll have more time which will ease the stress even more.

Don’t worry this isn’t a reality show. You don’t have to do it all in one day! Start small by changing a few habits and over time, your home and health will naturally improve. Here are some simple tips to get started.

When you finish using something, put it away immediately. Do not fall into the habit of putting things down and thinking you will take care of them later when you have more time – take care of them now. Those things pile up, and you will wish that you had dealt with them right away when you see the stack you created – one item at a time. You will find that if you make the effort to take care of things at once, your life will run more smoothly, and you will feel more calm, collected and unhurried.

A place for everything and everything in its place is a good motto to use. It will only take an extra minute, and you will feel good about it when it is done. Set a good example for the rest of your family, and when they see you cheerfully putting things away, they may join you and help to keep your home neat.

If things have gotten out of hand, deal with only one small section at a time. Try beginning with the dining room table or that catch-all shelf by the entrance way. Organize that one area first without looking at the big picture –before you even think about the next one. You’ll find this approach is much less overwhelming.

Get some storage boxes and bags and use them. You can even find space saving boxes that fit under the bed. There are storage bags that you can use for bulky linens and clothes. They vacuum seal, so not only will they will fit in small spaces, but the oxygen-free environment will help your fabrics last longer. Mark any boxes and storage containers plainly, so you can easily locate your stored items when you need them. Things that you do not need to use very often can be stored in the garage or basement. If you haven’t used something in more than a year, consider giving it to charity.

When your house is neat and orderly, you will feel good about yourself and it will be easier to relax. In your new calm and clutter-free environment, you’ll find that clean living can lead to many wonderful health benefits.

All times of loneliness, confusion and restlessness come for a powerful reason-so we can stop our usual way of being in order to discover where true strength, connection and understanding lay. These difficult times are actually a gift, removing us from preoccupation with that which is not important and causing us to embark upon a journey into what is truly meaningful and healing in our lives.

A powerful way to dissolve restlessness is to turn to that which is greater than yourself, to open your heart and ask or pray for guidance and direction. By doing so, we let go of our reliance only upon our rational mind.

Another way of calming the restless mind is to stop your endless round of activities and simply sit down. You do not ask for help. You simply sit, back straight, legs crossed, eyes down. You do not speak, reach out, touch, or listen to the troubles of others. Certainly, you do not offer consolation or turn to others for support. In fact, what you thought of as support is taken away. If someone doing this with you, is having trouble, experiencing sorrow or pain, you do not interfere. Their experience is precious and they are now being given the opportunity to face it fully. The support you offer is silent and profound, just sitting strongly besides them, facing your own experience, and not moving.

As you engage in this practice, you discover that there is nothing you need to lean on.. Everything you need is right here, within. Just as you are, you are complete and whole. The only problem is you do not realize it, your life and mind are so cluttered, you are so attached to that which has no value and constantly seeking more.

This practice focuses the mind and heart, allows you to gather your scattered energy and be in touch with your essential self. .As you practice daily, your life becomes rooted in its original source. Gradually, your perceptions of life alter and you become able to live a life of balance, simplicity, sincerity and truth.

Usually, when most of us want to see beauty in a room, we bring in fancy paintings, furniture, precious objects. In this practice, when you want to see beauty in a room, you take everything out, one thing after another. Then when the room is empty, you can see its original nature. Its beauty shines by itself. In this practice you do the same. You take everything out of your life that causes clutter, static, confusion, greed. You take out plush furniture and people to lean on. As you do this, you naturally find your own inner balance and strength.

Usually, we live our lives in the opposite manner, seeking strength, comfort, support, from everything and everyone. But the more we search, cling and hunger, the worse our suffering becomes. Soon we are a slave, easily manipulated by those people and things that offer temporary salves and cures. This practice teaches not to lean, not to weaken yourself and others this way. Instead we simply cut the dependent mind. Once we do so, we naturally stop tossing and turning, stop clinging to others, and turn instead to the very source of healing and well being within.

In this fast competitive world every body is trying hard to make their own identity thus resulting in huge frustration and depression. Depression is not a sickness rather a much more serious case than that. If proper guidance is not provided to the depressed person then he or she might land up committing suicide also.

Now let’s understand the reason for depression. There are plenty of reasons for depression. Firstly as day by day the level of competition is increasing; everybody wants to be a part of the rat race thus creating a lot of frustration as well as depression too.

Even in corporate world it has been seen that people are fighting with each other for a single promotion. To get this promotion they go up to any extent. They can even do various tricky jobs to get that promotion thus after so much of pressure if someone doesn’t get that promotion it creates a lot of depression in that person.

Even at times too much of family problem can create a lot of depression. After so much of competition and rivalry in the outside world when a person doesn’t get the peace of mind in the home atmosphere it creates a lot of depression in the mind of the person.

Too much of expectation and stress can also be the reason for depression. Mostly in the normal families a lot of expectations are set for the male member, now this creates a lot of stress in the mind of the male member thus resulting in depression.

If some one is being neglected in his or her family then this also might lead to a great level of depressions. Also misunderstanding between the too partners can be another reason for depression. Also not being able to meet the bosses orders in the office can lead to over stress.

When parents expect a lot from their children, this too creates a lot of depression in the mind of the child. And unfortunately if the child is unable to live up to that expectation, it creates lots of frustration in the mind of the small child.

Now let’s talk about some of the remedies of depression. Firstly proper guidance and proper sympathy from the side of the family is required. So the family people must be very helpful and must guide the person who is suffering from depression.

A person who is depressed must go for consultation to an experienced psychiatrist. These people are professionally trained to cure this problem. Even proper diet and exercise can help you to reduce your depression. Proper yoga can keep your mind fresh. Listen to lot of music, spent time with small children etc. You can spend time with your pets. Even going out with friends and family for outings can reduce a lot of depression. You must go out for a small walk during the stressful time in your office. You must take things in a positive way. You must not give up in your life. All this can help a lot to reduce the level of depression.

Always remember at times depression can lead to suicide and even some people get addicted to drugs and alcohols also. So if somebody in your family is going through acute depression then give him love, affection and care and see how he or she starts loving the beautiful life again.

How to Fight Prostate Cancer – 4 Essential Tips to Maintain Excellent Prostate Health

There are many positive measures that you can take to maintain excellent prostate health. Here are 4 practical tips to implement in your daily life.

1) Lose your Belly Fat

Aim to keep your waistline trim. Fat in the body results in a drop of the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which circulates in the blood stream. When your Doctor checks your PSA levels to determine if you do have prostate cancer – an excess of weight may result in a skewing of test results.

2) Enjoy the sunshine!

Contrary to what you may have heard the sun isn’t all bad. In the US research carried out on men living within the sunniest states found a 32% lower risk rate of prostate cancer. This is believed to be as a result of Vitamin D, which we can get from the sun. However, if you are worried about damage to skin from the sun, you can get your Vitamin D requirements from Cod Liver Oil instead.

3) Follow Popeye’s example – eat spinach!

One study established that men could halve their risk of prostate cancer by establishing a high intake of folate. This is a nutrient that can be found in spinach. Aim for a daily quota of 400 micrograms (MCG). As a guide a 180g serving of cooked spinach will provide approximately 100 mcg

4) Think Red!

A study review published in the Journal of Nutrition established that eating between two to four servings of raw tomatoes reduced men’s risk of prostate cancer. by 26%. Alternatively, you could opt for a glass of tomato juice which contains similar cancer busting properties.

Prostate Cancer Causes

Prostate cancer causes are not fully able to be explained, but it appears that changes in the DNA of a prostate cell bring on the cancer. DNA is what makes up our genes, which in turn can control how individual cells behave under certain circumstances. We inherit DNA from our parents, and they from their ancestors. A very small percentage, around five to ten percent, it seems to be linked to these changes that are inherited.

It has also been shown to be possibly linked to certain hormones high levels. Higher than average levels of the male hormone androgens has been shown to possibly play a part in the risk of contracting prostate cancer. Researchers have also noted that men who have a high level of a hormone known as IGF-1 are more likely to suffer from prostate cancer. But other scientists have not agreed with the finding of this link.

We can only use risk factors to help determine causes, since we don’t know what exactly the most causative factor is. Various cancers will have different risk factors, and some, like smoking, can be controlled. But others, like family history or age, cannot be altered.

The presence of risk factors isn’t a sure sign, either. Some people have many risk factors, but never develop cancer. At the same time, other people with no apparent risk factors do develop cancer. The links between risk factors and prostate cancer is not fully clear.

The most important risk factor appears to be age. Your chance of developing cancer goes up most speedily after you reach fifty years of age. Nearly two of three cases occur in men over 65 years of age.

Race appears to be another risk factor in the development of cancer. For reasons unknown, African-American men are affected more than men of other races. They are also more likely to suffer from the more advanced stages of the disease, and thus are more likely to die because of prostate cancer. In addition, prostate cancer occurs more often in non-Hispanic white men than in Hispanic/Latino and Asian-American men. The reasons for these differences in likelihood are not clearly understood.
