Valerian is a plant native to Europe and Asia; it is also found in North America. Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Its therapeutic uses were described by Hippocrates, and in the 2nd century, Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia.

Common Names—valerian, all-heal, garden heliotrope

Latin Name—Valeriana officinalis

What Valerian Is Used For

Valerian has long been used for sleep disorders and anxiety.
Valerian has also been used for other conditions, such as headaches, depression, irregular heartbeat, and trembling.

How Valerian Is Used

The roots and rhizomes (underground stems) of valerian are typically used to make supplements, including capsules, tablets, and liquid extracts, as well as teas.

What the Science Says

Research suggests that valerian may be helpful for insomnia, but there is not enough evidence from well-designed studies to confirm this.
There is not enough scientific evidence to determine whether valerian works for other conditions, such as anxiety or depression.
NCCAM-funded research on valerian includes studies on the herb’s effects on sleep in healthy older adults and in people with Parkinson’s disease. NCCAM-funded researchers are also studying the potential of valerian and other herbal products to relieve menopausal symptoms.

Side Effects and Cautions

Studies suggest that valerian is generally safe to use for short periods of time (for example, 4 to 6 weeks).
No information is available about the long-term safety of valerian.
Valerian can cause mild side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, upset stomach, and tiredness the morning after its use.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about CAM, see NCCAM’s Time to Talk campaign.

Search the scientific literature for potential herb-drug interactions

Depression can be treated with medications or talk therapy, and both have supporters with countless studies to prove how effective they are. But researchers now know that all depression is not equal, and that different people need different approaches to get better. For someone suffering from depression, the bottom line is that depression can usually be treated effectively with one or a combination of treatments. The trick is figuring out which treatments work best for which people. Researchers are making progress toward the day they can do that. They’re also developing innovative new therapies that may change the way depression is treated in the future.

Depression is more than the blues or the blahs. Everybody gets sad or feels down sometimes, but most people with the blues can lift their mood by exercising, socializing or other activities. Those with major depression can’t, and their symptoms can last weeks, months or even years. These symptoms can include:

• A persistent sad, anxious or “empty” mood
• Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, worthlessness or helplessness
• Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities you once enjoyed
• Decreased energy and fatigue
• Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions
• Insomnia, early-morning awakening or oversleeping
• Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
• Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
• Restlessness, irritability
• Persistent physical symptoms such as headaches, digestive problems and chronic pain

Some people think depression is some kind of a personal weakness, something you can will away. Research has proven otherwise. Dr. Husseini Manji, director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), says, “If you’ve got this illness, your brain chemistry is not the way it should be. Lifestyle changes can help, but you can only do so much. You have to get treatment.”

In fact, depression takes a physical toll that doctors can measure. “We’re learning that depression is associated with a number of medical consequences,” Manji said. It raises the risk of heart disease, high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure. The chance of someone dying after a heart attack is 4 times greater if they’re depressed.

Antidepressant medications and talk therapy are the most common treatments for depression. Your doctor might have to try several treatments before finding the combination that’s right for you. For those who don’t respond to conventional treatments, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been the treatment of last resort. Electrodes are placed on the head to deliver electrical impulses and cause seizures within the brain. ECT is very effective, but it has serious drawbacks: It’s costly, requires multiple hospital visits and can result in memory loss.

A newer method for treating depression is called vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). First used for depression by Dr. Mark George of the Medical University of South Carolina and just approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, VNS serves as a sort of “pacemaker” for the brain. A surgically implanted device periodically sends small electric pulses up the vagus nerve in the neck and into the brain. George says researchers don’t fully understand why VNS works, but it does. However, it does require invasive surgery.

Advanced brain imaging techniques showing activity within the brain are allowing researchers to design newer methods for treating depression that target particular areas of the brain. Dr. Helen Mayberg at Emory University’s School of Medicine, for example, has used a technique called Deep Brain Stimulation, in which thin wires are surgically implanted into a particular area of the brain. A small current run through the wires improved depression in 4 of 6 patients. Such surgery may be impractical for large numbers of people, but Mayberg says her study proves the principle that a small electric current in this area of the brain can help treat depression. “This research may help point the way to other effective treatments,” she said.

George’s research group and others are pursuing a technique that doesn’t require surgery called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). In TMS, a small electromagnet on the scalp induces a current in the brain. The device can be fairly well focused in the brain and doesn’t seem to cause side effects. TMS has been promising in small studies, and a large-scale NIMH-funded study is now under way to test it more rigorously.

Another approach researchers are taking is to try to develop better medications to treat depression. Many scientists have been intrigued by the fact it often takes people days or weeks to get better with antidepressant medications even though the drugs work very quickly to affect the molecules that brain cells use to communicate with each other. Manji explained that we now know these medications are starting a process inside cells to turn certain genes on and off, and that those genes, in turn, are the ones responsible for people getting better. “There’s been a lot of research into trying to find what those genes are,” Manji said.

The genes researchers are uncovering seem to be involved in helping nerve cells grow and survive. While nerve cells in the brain don’t seem to die with depression, they do sort of “shrivel up,” as Manji put it.

“It’s good news because maybe we can do something about it,” Manji said. Several drugs targeting these new pathways are now being developed and tested, and Manji is optimistic that new medications will be available within the next few years.

Depression researchers hope that understanding the genes involved in depression will ultimately help doctors make better treatment decisions as well. Manji believes that as few as 4 or 5 genes might enable doctors to predict, with a simple blood test, which treatments will work best for which people.

None of these developments changes the fact that current treatments for depression still work for most people. “Most people bounce back and get totally back on their game if they get treated,” George stressed. If you or someone you know is depressed, get treatment as soon as you can.

-Depression has a significant impact on how we live our lives and react to daily situations. There is a serious influence on a person’s attitude when a depression takes over.

But, this is not the only effect that depression can have on the mind and body.

Specifically, depression can have a serious impact on a person’s appetite.

Regardless of which came first, many people just don’t realize how serious this can really be, believing that any weight loss is a good thing.

I mean, how big a deal can depression induced appetite changes really be, anyway?

Actually, they can be extremely serious, and that’s why it should never be overlooked or taken too lightly.

Loss of Appetite

Many of us are overweight to begin with, so in the beginning a loss in weight is often welcome, and may even help with the early symptoms of depression. Over time though, with this continued loss of weight, health problems will eventually develop.

A prolonged loss of appetite can cause many serious health problems. A lack of eating can deny the body a number of very important nutrients that are required for a person to remain healthy and strong. Dizziness and fainting can occur due to an actual malnutrition.

In addition, this lack of eating can lead to the body’s metabolism slowing down. One effect of this is the body may start to consume its own muscle mass in order to preserve the body’s fat cells.

Eventually, this can lead to low blood pressure and slower heart rates, having harmful effects on the heart muscle and possible heart problems.

Overeating

On the other side of the coin, many people will seek to alleviate their problems with depression by overeating, much like those with alcohol or drug addictions overdo it.

-In many ways, food can be a drug since it can affect the pleasure centers in the body.

When a person feels down and depressed, reaching for a large plate of food (especially sweets) can make the pain and problems go away, at least for a little while. Of course, this strategy will often lead to a number of physical problems down the road.

More often than not, the overeating will lead to obesity, or at least to a weight gain, which in turn can have a very negative effect on a person’s self-esteem. This lack of self-pride further increases a person’s depression and the cycle repeats, most often with additional weight gain and the deepening depression that’s sure to follow.

In Conclusion

When depression impacts a person’s desire to eat, a weakening of the immune system may result. This might start out as a simple case of the flu, and escalate into a more serious health condition, such a pneumonia, which can be quite serious, even life threatening.

-Additionally, a lack of eating (especially in combination with depression) can develop into a major eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia, which can prove to be life threatening as well.

Overeating, and the obesity that may result, might also be the root cause of future heart attacks, strokes and diabetes as well.

-There are many depression-warning signs; overeating and not eating surely make the list. Which problem occurred first is not as important as receiving treatment for both the depression, as well as the eating disorder,

…for helping one nearly always helps the other.

Aimee Liu, who wrote Solitaire, the first-ever memoir of anorexia, in 1979, returns to the subject nearly three decades later and shares her story and those of the many women in her age group of life beyond this life-altering ailment. She has extensively researched the origins and effects of both anorexia and bulimia, and dispels many commonly held myths about these diseases with the persuasive conclusion that anorexia is a result of personality.
Key revelations include: the temperament required for eating disorders, the long-term effects of eating disorders on health, brain function, relationships and career, why some individuals recover while others relapse, and why many relapse in mid-life,Which treatment approaches are most successful long-term and how parents can tell if a child will be vulnerable to eating disorders.

Using her own experience and the stories of many recovering anorexics she’s interviewed, Liu weaves together a narrative that is both persuasive in argument and compelling in personal details.

There’s nothing as depressing as being overweight or obese. Some say that depression causes obesity, yet others claim that it’s obesity that prompts a depressive state. Even researchers have been puzzled over this chicken-and-egg dilemma over the years. But there’s no question about it – obesity and depression are linked in both adolescents and adults, and no one wants to be stuck in either of these unfortunate situations.

There is no defined one-way link that states which causes which. Depression can cause a person to overeat and gain weight while being obese can cause an individual to get into a depressive state. The two can be co-dependent and feed off each other.

Depression causes obesity: Individuals with symptoms of depression tend to undergo drastic weight-related changes. People experiencing depression have a tendency to make poor food choices. Some tend to lose their appetite and a lot of sleep, while most are likely to overeat in an attempt to ward off the depression. Research has also observed that depression can cause decreased levels of the hormone seratonin. Seratonin acts as the brain’s oil and when we find ourselves in stressful or depressive states, we use more seratonin than is normally replaced. This results to the development of an appetite disorder . We either lose our appetite completely or yearn for sweets and carbohydrates as the brain tries to make more seratonin. Eating becomes a repressed effort to self-medicate and restore seratonin levels to normal.

Obesity causes depression: Overweight or obese people are 25 percent more likely to experience mood disorders such as overwhelming sadness and depression compared to those who are not. A low self-esteem and a tendency to isolate themselves contribute much to the cause of depression among overweight individuals who find themselves ostracized, discriminated against and stereotyped. The extra weight they carry can also result in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are known to be linked with conditions of depression.

Either way, depression and obesity are quite difficult states. Both conditions steal the life out of an individual and restricts him or her from fully enjoying the beauty of the world around him. There is help available and one road to take is treating such conditions the natural way. Nature’s supplements have an amazing capacity to heal the body and bring it back to optimum condition so that negative elements cease to take their toll.

Toxins and harmful elements invade our body through the food that we eat and the occasional agitation and turbulence of the daily grind. As a result, metabolism slows down and gives us that “I don’t want to get out of bed” feeling. Metabolic disturbance or disorder is one major cause of weight gain and hormonal imbalance that can cause depression. We need to provide the body with protection so it is able to deal with these conditions effectively.

One effective way to address this is to cleanse the body of all harmful toxins and free radicals so metabolism is restored and the body is able to absorb nutrients properly. The Clean 9 Nutritional Cleansing Program is designed to do just this. It is an thorough cleansing regimen specifically formulated to purge harmful chemicals and toxic build-ups in just 9 days. As it detoxifies, Clean 9 replenishes the body with essential nutrients intended to bring on a remarkable increase in energy, improved metabolism and digestion, enhanced immunity and protection, and increased mental awareness and stability.

Jumpstart your pursuit to get in shape and achieve total wellness of both mind and body. Get a detox and get a life!

Well developed and well managed community mental health services are actually associated with low suicide rates. Hence, mental health services for the masses can be improved by focusing on the community based and specialized mental health services.

If ever you are in need of mental health services, you can contact your local affiliates of the national self help organizations or the local mental health center. Most of these agencies have the relevant information on the various services designed to meet the different needs of those who are suffering from different types of disorders such as anxiety conditions, panic disorders, schizophrenia, etc. Apart from these, they also provide information related to community mental health services designed specifically for children, refugees, HIV infected patients, the elderly, etc. Here are a list of various community health services available for your use.

Mental health act has provided a great opportunity in rendering different kinds of community care based upon individual needs. The provision of good residential accommodation for various groups of mentally disordered or patients with disorders who need constant care by the government aided agencies is a step towards enhancing the community health services.

Generally community health services treat or support people suffering with mental disorders in a domiciliary setting instead of placing them in a hospital or a psychiatric asylum. The various services offered by these community services usually differ from country to country. Most of the community services consist of psychiatric wards similar to that of a hospital. These services are mostly rendered by professionals and government organizations. According to the world health organization, community services are very easy to access by a wide range of people and are quite effective and even aid in reducing social exclusion.

When compared to private mental hospital, community services are less likely to have possibilities for the violation and neglect of human rights which are rarely encountered in few of the mental hospitals. These community services also play an important role in educating the people about the various common disorders and their corresponding symptoms. This way, people gain knowledge on various disorders and can easily recognize individuals who may be suffering from these disorders but might not really be aware of them. Aged and older people who require constant attention, can get benefited by these community services, instead of paying huge bills at private hospitals, they can get good care at the community services.

With the population in the older age group on the rise, there is need for the development of community mental health services in various localities. Also, with many specialists willing to volunteer at the community services, clients can gain a lot of benefits. Since, most of the mental health disorders occurrence do not have a clear reason behind them, the treatment usually is a long term one and for people who cannot afford highly expensive treatments and consultations, community mental health services is the best place to choose. With government pitching in to provide funds for them, it is time people think of visiting them when needed.

Christine Crotts loves supporting the local sports teams but can’t stand those bleacher seats. Christine has written a site containing reviews on stadium cushion, as well as stadium seat cushions.

Mental disorders are a commonly occurring problem all over the world. It is an accepted fact that as many as one in six people will suffer from a mental disorder at some point in their lives. This is because of the variety of causes of mental disorders, as well as an increasingly stressful way of life causing difficulties for many people. The following are four very common mental disorders which will probably affect either you or someone you know over the course of their life.

Stress

Stress is rapidly becoming one of society’s biggest killers. Stress is a mental disorder, but manifests itself in a large number of physical symptoms. Stress is caused by the ‘fight or flight’ response being triggered. This is an evolutionary response to danger which has a variety of effects on the body. It floods the body with adrenaline, raises blood pressure and represses the immune system, pushing all energy toward the ability to fight danger or run from it. Stress occurs when the ‘fight or flight’ response is triggered and not allowed to subside by removal of the danger. High pressured jobs often have this effect. This can result in a variety of conditions such as hypertension, stomach ulcers, insomnia and alopecia.

Depression

Depression is a very common mental disorder; it has many varieties and its victims have no barriers of age, culture, race or gender. Just some of the varieties of depression are:

- Bipolar Disorder or Manic Depression, where the sufferers go through periods of intense highs and lows, where the highs are euphoric and the lows result in utter despair.

- SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a condition caused by lack of sunlight. Many people find that in the winter lack of exposure to sunlight causes them to feel depressed. There are many treatments for this such as light boxes which create artificial daylight to mimic the effect of the sun.

- Post Natal depression – this is a result of pregnancy and birth. It can be characterised by a lack of interest in the baby, and usual depression symptoms such as low mood.

There is a lot of stigma surrounding depression, but it is in fact an incredibly common condition, and contrary to popular belief it can be managed and cured as many other disorders can.

Phobias

Phobias are the subject of much hilarity in some quarters; a vaguely irrational fear of spiders can be amusing and entertaining. Some phobias such as phobias of jelly and birds are downright bizarre, but there are more serious phobias which can impair day to day functioning. Some people have a fear of open spaces called Agoraphobia; this can leave them trapped in the house unable to function normally. Phobias can be dealt with through conditioning and a variety of other psychological techniques, often involving a patient being slowly introduced to the object of their fear.

Dementia

Dementia affects elderly members of the population; it tends to develop as people age, and their brains are unable to function to the same level. This can lead to confusion, and some highly unpleasant symptoms such as aggression. It also has an effect on personality and behaviour, often changing someone drastically. Unfortunately there is no cure for dementia, and sufferers will usually become progressively worse until they are no longer able to function without full time care.

Christine Crotts knows it is wasteful, but she really enjoys a long hot shower to wind down after a long day. Christine has written a site containing reviews on large bath towels, as well as striped bath towels.

If you are wanting to learn to meditate, then you have come to the right place. While you can probably find an abundance of different ways to meditate, here is one simple way that doesn’t cost a penny, is easy to do, and can be done by anyone. It is quite effective for not only relieving stress on a regular basis, but can also be a base for healing a number of different ailments. So if you need to relieve stress and anxiety, or want a good start to fix what ails you, then listen up.

The first step is finding a nice, quiet area. This can be in a bedroom, a corner of your home or office, whatever. Now it is a good idea to have absolutely no distractions for at least twenty to thirty minutes, ten to do your deep breathing exercises, and twenty for the actual meditation. In order to get into the proper mood, you need a comfortable chair, and the lights turned down low. You can light some candles to get this mood going. You don’t want to be so comfortable that you will fall asleep, just deeply relaxed. You can also play some music, but soft music is preferred, or even a CD with nature sounds, like waves crashing, or a babbling brook, something soft.

Sit in your chair in a comfortable position, feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes, and breath slowly and deeply through your nose, holding it in for a few seconds once your lungs are full, then breathe out slowly through your mouth. Do this for five minutes, not really thinking about anything, letting go of the tension. There are two reasons for this. One is that breathing like this fills your body with oxygen. The second is that it forces you to pause.

If you find that you open your eyes once in awhile, don’t worry about it, and don’t force yourself to keep your eyes closed. Open them, look around check the clock, then close your eyes again. Now, with your eyes closed, picture yourself in front of a quiet pond that has a bunch of stones or pebbles. These are the thoughts and stresses in your life. These can also represent illnesses, cancers, or what ever your problem at the time might be. One by one, remove these stones and place them aside. It is a good idea to limit the amount of stones to ten or fifteen of the most important things that you want to get rid of, so you aren’t spending the whole time taking out stones. This should be about ten minutes.

Now here is where you can really customize your meditative experience. For just regular meditation, you want to put stones back into the pond that associate with things that represent relaxation or good aspects of your life. Maybe you could fill it with things that you dream about wanting, that nice house, your ideal partner, etc. For healing, this is when you focus on the part of your body that is ill, or needs help healing, like a broken bone mending, getting stronger, or antibodies killing that cancer. Do this for another ten minutes. The last five minutes, use your deep breathing exercises again, and slowly bring yourself back to reality. Now don’t expect a miracle, but if you do this on a regular basis, it will work.

With all the stresses in our lives in today’s day and age, we all need some way to relax and unwind. Having too much stress can not only cause mental problems and anxieties, but can also manifest itself in physical problems as well. Some of these include high blood pressure, hypertension, stomach ulcers, just to name a few of the many. It can effect our sleeping habits, sex life, and make relationships difficult. It can effect not only you personally, but everyone around you as well.

So how can we relieve all of these stresses? While there are many different ways to do this, and each person has their own, many are starting to turn to meditation as a way to relieve stress and anxieties that occur in every day lives. It isn’t hard to do, is cheaper than therapy, and is very effective. The idea behind meditation is consciously relaxing the body and mind, through a variety of different techniques, each that have their own methods. Some methods want you to focus on certain things, like a quiet and relaxing spot on the beach, while others simply allow your mind to wander off, like sleeping, but in a different state of mind.

No matter which method you try, there are things that they all have in common. The first is that they involve deep breathing exercises. Deep breathing does a number of different things. For one, breathing exercises get you to focus on something other than your stress. You are focusing on your breathing, counting the length of time you breathe in, and out. It also gets much more oxygen into your blood stream, which is good for your cells, and your brain, in order to function properly. It slows down your heart beat, because it doesn’t need to work as hard to pump oxygen through your body. All of these work together to help you start to relax.

They next thing all of these techniques have in common is that you need to do them every day, at least once a day, for twenty to thirty minutes. Some say you need more time, some say less. Many of us don’t have that kind of time throughout the day, but if you can spend just ten or fifteen minutes twice a day, then a longer period before bed time, you will get the same benefits.

Common to all forms of meditation is that you need to be in a place with little or no distractions. You can use music if it helps you, and there are verbal things you can say to get you focused on meditation, rather than what is going on around you. It is best to be sitting in a comfortable chair, with the lights dimmed. You don’t want it dark, or the chair so comfortable that you fall asleep, because meditation is not sleep, but a higher state of consciousness.

Many businesses today are starting to realize the need for meditation in the work place, in order to keep stress levels down. Some companies even require employees to take a ten to twenty minute break just for meditation, and have rooms set aside for this purpose. The idea is that it more productive to do this, than the time lost from employees getting sick from the stresses at work.

Even though it may not be apparent, a majority of us are known to suffer from depression. A recent medical research showed that over 87.19% of the world population is known to suffer from some form of depression. Many feel that the only way to deal with such a problem is through prescribed medication. Even though prescribed medication has been proven to have its benefits, the side effects that it brings along with it are the main reason it is mostly avoided. There are many natural remedies that one can use which we are going to take a closer look at.

One of the most important factors that are known to act as a major contributor to depression is our diet. It is highly recommended to consume a healthy diet that consists of fruits and vegetables. Proving your body with the right nutrition ensures that your level of iron and thyroid remain constantly normal. Having the right balance of nutrition on our body is known to prevent depression as it keeps the body active which in result keeps a person in a good mood.

Another great way through which you can deal with depression naturally is by doing regular exercise. In this particular case, it would be advised to do as much cardio exercise as possible. Cardio exercise is known to increase the level of serotonin which is the main contributor to keeping an individual’s mood happy. Doing exercise on a regular basis will reduce depression has it gets rid of anxiety and frustration that you may have built up.

It is advised that you should try meeting new people as well to help reduce depression. This can be done by joining a club or group. Research has shown that the more people you have to talk to and spend time with, keeps your mind off unnecessary issues that are known to cause depression in the first place. The key with making more friends is to find people you can trust and get close to; those whom you wouldn’t mind sharing things with.

Meditation has always been a great way to naturally deal with depression as well. Meditation can include things such as yoga’s, watching health videos were you practice specific exercise etc.

All these approaches mentioned above have been proven to reduce depression naturally. What you do have to realize however is that simply sticking to one of the above options would not be sufficient. You should be aiming to have a mixture of at least or three options that have been mentioned above to see any major changes. Most of the time we feel that we are depressed over things that make us feel as though it is the end of the world. When in actual fact looking at your problem from a third person’s perspective actually can make you realize that your problem is something that you can easily deal with. Any one can deal with their problems naturally by implementing a few changes in their lifestyle.
