If you’ve ever groaned, “Oh, my aching back!”, you are not alone. Back pain is one of the most common medical problems, affecting 8 out of 10 people at some point during their lives. Back pain can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain. Acute back pain comes on suddenly and usually lasts from a few days to a few weeks. Back pain is called chronic if it lasts for more than three months.

Most back pain goes away on its own, though it may take awhile. Taking over-the-counter pain relievers and resting can help. However, staying in bed for more than 1 or 2 days can make it worse.

If your back pain is severe or doesn’t improve after three days, you should call your health care provider. You should also get medical attention if you have back pain following an injury.

Ever experienced severe back pain? Sometimes, we perceive back pain as a form of illness that is being experienced by old people when in fact it is not.

Ever experienced severe back pain? Sometimes, we perceive back pain as a form of illness that is being experienced by old people when in fact it is not. Anyone can suffer from back pain, the young and old, men and women, even individuals who have large muscles and strong body build. There is no exception.

Experiencing back pain can be very disturbing especially when we are working or when we are resting. Sitting for more than eight hours can bring about back pain and so does lying in bed for how many hours. It is important for us to spend five minutes of stretching especially when our work entails excessive hours of sitting and facing on computers. A five minute break every two hours would probably be enough to strengthen the muscles and stretch the bones. This exercise will not only benefit our bodies but it will also allow us to become awake when we feel dizzy or tired.

When the pain in our back still persists and pain medications no longer respond, it is best to consult your health care provider that way we will know if we are suffering from bone disorders. There are so many disorders that have back pain as a common symptom. We should be very careful though because we might think that the pain in our back is just ordinary and that it is just a normal occurrence after sitting or overdoing some exercises.

Other causes of back pain are improper body mechanics, trauma, aging and any damage that affect the nerves in our back. This can contribute to having pain in our back and other symptoms of a particular disease. There are some back problems that can be treated with pain or anti-inflammatory medications and some therapeutic techniques like gentle massage, physical therapy and cold compression. If the therapeutic techniques will not work, then a surgery to correct back problem might be necessary. However, surgery may not at all be the solution to all back problems therefore it is wise to consult first your health care provider for specific instructions.

Most people tend to become aggressive and will really undergo surgery in order to get rid of the back pain. There are occurrences where the surgery will only aggravate the pain and thus bring a lot of complication and worse, infections. Back pains are usually found in the spine, the lumbar and the sacral bones. The nerves are affected once there is a problem in those areas making the individual to experience back pain. Surgery may be needed in this life circumstances. Like if the problem is on the spine, spinal fusion may be required. Successful spinal fusion surgery recovery is possible when the doctors and other health care team are really doing their best to correct the problem.

Doctors will always give their patient advice on back surgery based on the presenting symptoms. The experts will know whether or not surgery is recommended or if non-invasive procedures will cure the problem. It is very wise to consider all options that are available that will prevent you from undergoing painful surgeries. To prevent any back problems, it is best to maintain a healthy lifestyle, proper use of body mechanics and daily exercise.

If we experience back problems, there is a need for us to consult and seek the advice of medical experts. The medical experts will then evaluate us if there is a need to undergo surgery. Back surgery may not be necessary at all if the back pain or problem can still be treated with non-invasive procedures like massage, therapy and application of cold compress.

It is extremely common the presence of patients with back pain as the back is the main hub that supports the entire physical burden.

The lumbar spine as a lever of first grade takes all the strength and power to which we subject the laws of physics for a place in space. Everything rests on it when we are tired, we lift a heavy object or we take a wrong position, the back is affected.

But everybody do not feel the same pain, despite appearances.

The lumbar back pain is a painful inflammation of the lumbar or lower back area, the causes may be:

- Efforts in the wrong position: to work continuously in poor posture, long time ironing clothes, lift many weights, doing some field work.

- A pulled muscle: Sometimes a sudden movement can trigger it. Quite often when we do physical exercise without warming.

- Intestinal gas and constipation: it is curious how many people with gas or abdominal bloating suffer chronic constipation. The weakness of the abdominal muscles is the cause.

- Muscle tension stress: lack of muscle relaxation gets back and just weakening the area.

- Mechanical problems that weaken the area as osteoarthritis and disc herniation.

Some people have one leg longer than the other, most of these cases only indicate that the spine has scoliosis deformity.

- Go wrong footwear: high heels excessively oblige adopting a position that creates an ongoing tension in the lumbar region.

- Risk factors: long periods of sitting or standing, inactivity and obesity. These factors also contribute to low back pain occurs, infection, arthritis, inflammation or damage to spinal discs.

As a matter of fact a painful lumbar processes can manifest themselves in different ways. They are: Inflammatory root compression: immediate-onset pain, which may extend into the leg, often not beyond the knee, usually without radiculitis. It is produced by a twisting of the trunk or flexion and extension effort. Acute nerve root compression, nerve root acutely in 90 percent caused by herniated disk. Root entrapment: Irritation of the nerve root by the development of degenerative (osteoarthritis). Consult your doctor urgently if appear new symptoms like: fever, abnormal urine, feces or gynecological disorders.

In order to prevent further episodes you can follow a few simple rules: Wear comfortable shoes with low heels. In bed, put a pillow under your back or under your knees if you sleep on your side with your knees bent and a pillow between them. Join gradually to daily activities. If you must lift weights, bend your knees to force and make them keeping the object close to your body.

Also lose weight if overweight. Do not stay too long sitting or standing. Perform each exercise for 2 hours stretching the lumbar musculature: in a standing position bend forward and backward. Avoid sudden movements, adopt good posture, warm up before exercising. Do exercises in the workplace. Use belt at the waist for all work activities that require straining or indispensable demonstrations involving the lumbar spine.

What is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body, and when it becomes inflamed, it can cause significant pain in the lower back and leg. Not only is the sciatic nerve the longest nerve in the body, it is also the widest. The nerve starts in the lower back, and runs through the buttock and down the leg. It provides nerve impulses for all the skin of the leg, as well as the muscles at the back of the thigh and of the calf and foot.

Sciatica is the term used to describe leg pain that is caused by an inflammation of the sciatic nerve. The symptoms of sciatica can range from numbness, feelings of pins and needles and muscle weakness in the leg, to pain that can be quite severe. The pain and symptoms are not always localized and can be felt in the lower back or buttock area or anywhere throughout the leg or foot. Usually, sciatica only affects one side of the body, but it can lead to difficulty moving.

Causes of Sciatica

While many think of sciatica as a diagnosis, it is actually a symptom of another underlying problem. There are four common causes of sciatica, which are:

Disc injury – This can be a herniated disc, also called a slipped disc, or a torn disc. If sciatica is caused by a disc injury, it is called sciatic neuritis.

Spinal stenosis – This condition is caused by a narrowing of the spinal column or the bony canal where the sciatic nerve passes through. Spinal stenosis is a chronic condition that is common with aging. As the spinal column or bony canal narrow, they press against the nerve, which causes pain and inflammation.

Lumbar facet syndrome – This is also a chronic condition that is affiliated with age and changes due to arthritis. Facet joints appear in pairs at the back of each vertebrae of the spine to allow movement. Over time, they can degenerate, which can lead to compression of the sciatic nerve. Lumbar facet syndrome is more common in the elderly, although it can be caused by a facet joint sprain.

Trapped nerves – When it comes to the sciatic nerve, it becomes “trapped” when the surrounding muscle contracts and squeezes it. Chronic muscle spasms can cause the tightness and may be due to imbalances of the spine and pelvis and degenerating discs. This is commonly called “wallet sciatica” as it is caused by sitting on a wallet for long periods of time.

Diagnosing the Cause of Sciatica

Before treatment can begin, it is important that the underlying cause of the sciatic symptoms is diagnosed. In order to determine if the pain is caused by the sciatic nerve, and why it is being caused, chiropractors will take the time to evaluate the entire spine, hips and leg that is symptomatic. In this way, not only will the correct symptoms be treated, but further damage by incorrect treatment will be avoided.

Treatment is dependent on what is causing the sciatic symptoms, and because different parts of the body are the root cause of the pain and inflammation, chiropractors approach each diagnosis differently. During your initial visit with a chiropractor, joint range and motion, potential disc injury, muscle spasm and ligament injury will all be tested. Also, your overall posture and walk will be evaluated. All of these tests will point out what is causing your pain.

Treating Sciatica with Chiropractic Care

Once the cause of your symptoms has been determined, the chiropractor will provide a treatment plan. This plan will be determined by the root cause of the condition and can involve spinal adjustment, spinal manipulation, manual therapy of soft tissues, like muscles and ligaments, and therapies to reduce the inflammation, such as ultrasound treatment.

Spinal manipulation and adjustments are used to improve joint motion and return soft tissues back to a healthy state. Depending on the patient, they can be hands-on and apply force directly to the affected joints, or more gentle with indirect force applied. Manual therapy involves applying pressure to muscles in spasm to release the tension and also stretching and resistance exercises. Finally, ultrasound or electrical stimulation may be used to reduce inflammation of the area and may be required before or at the same time as the other methods of treatment.

Whether your sciatic symptoms are caused by mechanical damage or nerve-related damage, working with a chiropractor is sure to reduce, if not remove entirely, your discomfort so you should be able to get back to your daily life activities.

As my wife and I have lately found out, choosing a health care professional for your family is not an easy task. Luckily, I do not have this problem when choosing a chiropractor because that is what I work as, but here are some tips for when you and your family need the services of a Doctor of Chiropractic…

1. Find a chiropractor who is in a convenient location.

This is not to say that we do not absolutely love our patients who do not live near us, or stay with us after they have moved house, but living nearby makes it easier to find suitable appointment times, and also to stick to them.

Choosing one based solely on convenience is not recommended either. However, if your new chiropractor maps out a care plan and strategy for you health, the best chance for you follow these recommendations is to have easy access to their office.

2. Check that your prospective chiropractor has a valid license with no restrictions to practice in your state.

This may seem obvious, but in any profession that requires licensure, instances of people working fraudulently are more commonplace than you probably think that they are.

The way to verify a if a chiropractor is licensed is through your local health department health care provider lookup. In my opinion, if choosing between a couple of chiropractors, and one has a full license and one does not, it only makes sense to opt for the one with the full license.

3. Have an understanding of the type of chiropractic technique the chiropractor will use.

There are many types of chiropractic techniques. A chiropractor should use the technique most appropriate for each person’s physical condition, health goals, and also your age.

A worthwhile chiropractor should be totally open and transparent about they work, and should not take offence about you making enquiries such as these. Still, if you do not want to ask them face to face, then you can find out lots of relevant information by visiting their website.

4. Ask your family and friends for recommendations for a good chiropractor. Read reviews but proceed with caution.

There is not much better then a recommendation from a friend, family member, or a knowledgeable person in the community. If no-one can give you one, or the ones they recommend are too far away, it is great to go to local community review sites and forums, and quite possibly sites like Google and Yelp.

Review sites can be wonderful, and they are currently the way most internet users make decisions when purchasing goods and services. I have found that is pretty easy to figure out legitimate reviews from reviews made by those business owners with a vested interest. Look for a chiropractor with 95%+ good reviews as a minimum.

5. Enquire as to whether they offer free, no obligation, consultations.

The answer to this question will say a lot about the chiropractic office you are considering. This consultation should be the clincher on deciding who you would like to see. It is not an interview, but it is a chance to see if you mesh with the chiropractor, their admin team, and the overall environment you will be in while achieving better health.

Many of us suffer from chronic back pain for one reason or another. It could be as simple as stress from a long days work to more severe causes such as a compressed disc. Fact is many of us would rather find a more natural and permanent way to relieve our pain than relying on pain medications and heating pads. Yes stretches and exercise is one of the best and most recommended relief methods but how many of us are able to do the physical exercises while in back pain? For years inversion therapy has been used for this very purpose and has received a lot of good feedback from those who have used it. Its an age old technique that just may offer many of us the relief we need.

Spinal traction of any kind is a pulling force intended to stretch the ligaments and muscles in the spine and add to the space separating the vertebrae. It is used by physical therapists and chiropractors, along with other treatments, to ease lower back pain in general and treat sciatica in particular.

Inversion Therapy

This form of traction has been used since ancient times, and it involves having the patient hang upside down to relieve pressure on the spine, Today, a well-known piece of equipment, the inversion table, is used for this purpose, and the patient’s body weight is used to stretch the spine in the inversion process. Some people feel more comfortable with partial inversion, and an inversion table can be adjusted to tilt at different angles, even a slightly inverted level of 20 – 30 degrees.

As people adjust to the treatment, the slant can be increased to 60 degrees, which will automatically add to the stretch. There is also a psychological component to this treatment, and if they feel insecure in the optimum inverted position, the muscles will contract, which will defeat the purpose of the therapy.

Adjusting to the Treatment

The amount of time people spend using an inversion table is correlated with the particular angle being used at the time. Ordinarily, they start by inverting for a few minutes and work up to 10 minutes as they adjust to the process and become more relaxed while doing it. (Many patients use the inversion table 2 or 3 times daily to relieve their lower back pain.)

As the back is stretched, pressure in the nerve roots and intervertebral disks lessens and back pain is reduced. This treatment can also be beneficial to individuals with poor posture as it elongates the muscles, and medical professionals sometimes rely on using the inversion table to increase the flow of blood to the brain and boost the patient’s mental alertness.

Recommendations Before Using an Inversion Table

Always consult with your physician before taking this step, and note that it is not recommended for individuals with osteoporosis, coronary or circulatory problems, high blood pressure, or related conditions. Note also that it has not been proven scientifically that the use of any type of traction will ensure long-term benefits, but it is generally used and accepted as a means of providing temporary relief for people living with chronic pain in the lower back.

Information about Tylenol

Don’t use more than the recommended ammount. An overdose of acetaminophen can cause serious damage. The highest amount of acetaminophen for grown up person is one gram (1000 mg) per dose and four grams (4000 mg) daily. Taking more acetaminophen could damage the liver. If you drink more than three drinks per day, talk to your family doctor before taking acetaminophen and don’t use more than two grams (2000 mg) daily.

Do not use this medicine without first talking to your family doctor; if you drink more than 3 alcoholic beverages per day then you suffer from cirrhosis (alcoholic liver disease).

Do not use other over-the-counter, cough, cold, and allergy, pain relievers without asking your doctor or pharmacist. Acetaminophen (sometimes called APAP) contained in multi-drug combination shortened. Read the label to use any other medicine to determine if it contains acetaminophen or APAP.

Before taking Tylenol

Do not use Tylenol if you are allergic to paracetamol.

If you have these conditions, you must need a dosage adjustment or very special tests to use these drugs safely. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using Tylenol if you have:

* liver diseases or

* A history of alcoholism.

It is not recognized if Tylenol can harm an unborn baby. Before using acetaminophen, talk to your family doctor if you are pregnant. Paracetamol can go into breast milk and may hurt a nursing infant.

Is Tylenol safe?

Tylenol (acetaminophen also known as paracetamol) is in the news recently. Most of the stories I’ve ever seen were in fact correct, but I have a couple people who read it wrong. I thought I would try to do things correctly.

An advisory committee to the FDA recommended reducing the maximum dose of 1000 mg and 650 mg over-the-counter acetaminophen.

The dose of 1000 mg is available with a prescription. It also recommended the abolition of painkillers like Percocet Vicodin and that the combination of drugs and paracetamol. It proposes the elimination of paracetamol over-the-counter cold remedies disadvantages, the disadvantages of cough medicines and related products, which combine with other drugs, acetaminophen. Advisory committee recommendations are not binding but the FDA usually follows.

Some people believe that the FDA has found that acetaminophen can be dangerous. The danger is that if you take too much can damage the liver. The information is new only that paracetamol overdose is now the leading cause of liver damage resulting in estimated 1600 cases of liver failure per year.

When properly used at recommended doses, paracetamol is one of the safest medicines we have. There is little cause side effects. It is the drug used during pregnancy. We use it even for pain and fever in infants. The alternatives are dangerous aspirin can cause syndrome Reye, non-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen which can cause kidney damage gastrointestinal bleeding.

The maximum recommended dose of 1000 mg four times daily or 4000 mg per day in total. There are exceptions: people who should have a liver disease that leads to drink large amounts of alcohol, or take less than Coumadin. Some other drugs interact with acetaminophen metabolism and increase the standard dose less effective.

Back pain is horrible and people that suffer from it will do just about anything to rid of the pain. People’s activities are temporarily put to an end because the pain is sudden and excruciating when it strikes. Productivity dies and the sufferer can be immobilized, and will lose the ability to do many day-to-day activities.

Back pains arise from muscle and spinal strains. Sometimes, they arise from stress and poor posture as well. There are several ways to get rid off back pains. Among the well known ones are massage, yoga, and various stretches and exercises. However, a practice that started a long time ago is still practiced in today’s world. This is known as inversion therapy.

What Is Inversion therapy?

Inversion therapy is the taking of gravitational force away from the human spine, which gives wider sets of spaces between the vertebrae. Simply put, inversion therapy occurs when a body is hung upside down to eliminate back pain. Although there are conflicting opinions as to the effectiveness of inversion therapy on people, the majority of people believe that this ancient practice efficiently relieves back pains. More specialists deem that inversion therapy has been proven useful and valuable for people whose back pains cannot usually be cured by yoga, stretching or exercise.

Is Inversion Therapy Safe?

Many doctors question the use and importance of inversion therapy as they say it is unsafe for people with heart diseases like hypertension or glaucoma. The upside-down hanging could be very risky for others because it slows down the beating of the heart while increasing blood pressure. Some doctors, on the other hand, accept the therapy as a safe method for relieving back pains, as long as a patient does not suffer from any cardiovascular disease. If you are unsure if inversion therapy is right for you, the best thing to do is consult your doctor.

How Does Inversion Therapy Work?

Inversion therapy is a method in which the spine is stretched to release the strains and tensions housed within the back’s muscles and cartilage. The stretching of the spine is what experts call traction.

There are three ways to conduct inversion therapy. One is when a patient’s feet are tied from a horizontal pole where in the body is suspended in the air. The second method involves the same pole except that for this method, the pole has extra supports for the knees and the stomach, which give them a bent and flexed stance. The last one, as you may have seen in movies, involves a table where a patient will lay down. The person will then be fastened onto the table with supportive metal links and the table will be slowly tipped and tilted up until such time that the patient’s head is already adjacent to the floor.

No matter how people view inversion therapy, what matters is that they get to choose the best option for their convenience and betterment. Then again, as the saying goes, prevention is better than a cure. Back pain can be prevented by eating food rich in calcium, observing proper posture, and doing light stretches and exercises regularly.

If you are one of many who are dealing with upper back pain daily, you have come to the right article. Upper back pain is an agonizing ailment which makes it difficult to go through the daily movements of life. Typically, upper back pain is the result of a strained muscle. Therefore, doctors cannot do much for it. If you are suffering with this, there are things which you can do to make your day-to-day life easier.

Both ice and over-the-counter, anti-inflamatory medication aid to fight swelling and pain. When using ice, it is important that you do not apply the ice directly to your skin. Instead, wrap the ice in a washcloth. This prevents skin damage which can occur if the skin becomes too cold. If deciding to take medication, only take as directed. If you have any other health issues, be sure to read the labels carefully. Also, women who are pregnant need to first consult with their doctor before taking any type of medication.

Research has shown that those who continue daily activities have a quicker recovery rate than those who become more sedentary than usual. When dealing with upper back pain, there are several different types of exercises that you can perform to relieve your back pain. Before you do any strengthening exercises, it is important to stretch your upper back muscles. Which stretch is best for you depends on where your injury is located. A variety of exercises can be found through an online search engine. Once you have stretched, strengthening the muscle will prevent pain from returning. This can be done through weightlifting. However, a simple and popular method is a push-up. Push-ups will provide the strength training you need, and can be done to meet your strength.

A massage is another remedy which will make living with upper back pain easier. Whether your masseuse is your spouse, significant other, friend, or a professional, having a massage is a useful way to relieve upper back pain. Generally, a massage relaxes the muscles. Because upper back pain is typically a muscle strain, loosening and relaxing the muscles are key to healing your upper back pain.

Ultimately, you must find a way to relax. A strain tightens the muscle which has been pull. Therefore, it is not a good idea to add any additional, unnecessary stress to your life when dealing with this type of injury. In order to relax, there are several types of relaxation techniques that you can try. Some methods include, deep-breathing techniques, counting backwards, and meditation. These are just some idea. In order to truly relax, you must find what works for you.

While upper back pain is not common among most people, it still happens. When it does, it is as serious as pain in you mid or lower back. Because of this, if the pain lasts more than a couple of weeks you should consult a doctor. Once you are no longer experiencing this agony, it is wise to begin prevention of future attacks. Simple lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and proper posture will go a long way in preventing future health issues.
